This study is focused on the level of weapons development from the Japanese Invasion of Korea to the last phase of the Chosun Dynasty, the analysis of its use and influence in the conduct of war, and the derivation of modern implications. This study found the following conclusions. Chosun Dynasty did not deviate greatly from the traditional weapons level and was not more active or innovative than neighboring countries in terms of the speed of arms development. In the end, it resulted in a tragedy of surrender of or to invasion by foreign powers. If the level of weapons development after and during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in the Chosun Dynasty is divided into four stages: innovation, growth, stagnation, and regression; then the overall relative stagnation and regression can be described in comparison with neighboring countries. The implications, in modern times for us, are that the persistence of weapons development and development in military force cannot be overemphasized. In other words, innovative pursuit for a relative advantage is necessary. Finally, the desired effect on national security grounds, will only be doubled when it comes to the attention and active support of the entire nation and its experts engaged in military affairs.

본 연구는 조선시대 임진왜란 이후부터 말기에 이르기까지 무기발전의 수준과 전쟁수행에 서의 활용 및 영향에 관한 분석, 그리고 현대적 함의 도출에 주안을 두고 있다. 연구결과 조선은 임진왜란을 겪었음에도 불구하고 이후 300여 년은 전통적인 무기의 수 준을 크게 벗어나지 못하였고, 주변국의 무기발전 속도에 비해서도 보다 적극적이지도, 혁신 적이지도 못하였다. 결국 병자호란에서 청의 강력한 군사력에 항복하고, 조선 말기 병인․신 미양요 시에는 서양의 근대화된 화력에 쉽게 무너졌으며, 급기야 서양식 근대화된 군사력으 로 무장한 일본제국주의에 침략당하는 비극을 초래하게 된다. 조선시대 임진왜란 이후의 무기발전 수준을 혁신, 성장, 침체, 퇴조의 4단계로 구분한다 면, 전반적으로 주변국과 비교 시 상대적 침체 및 퇴조라 표현할 수 있다. 이를 통해 현대 우리에게 주는 함의는 군사력 중 무기 개발과 발전의 지속성은 아무리 강 조하여도 지나치지 않는다는 점과, 상대적 우위를 위한 혁신적 추구가 필요하다는 점이다. 그리고 단지 군사에 종사하는 전문가뿐만 아니라 국가안보적 차원에서 전 국민의 관심과 적 극적인 지원 하에서 이루어져야 그 효과가 배가 될 것이다.
