The purpose of this paper is to find out why it was necessary to publish a Chinese text ‘『Saminpilji』’. The reason for this is that it is in the publication of authentic historical books related to world geography, and the purpose of deriving the historical characteristics of ‘『Saminpilji』’ is to clarify that the purpose of the expansion of intellectual enlightenment in modern enlightenment is related to the publication of the Chinese text. The reasons for publishing the Chinese text are as follows. First, there is an intention to include historical descriptions in the Korean version. Second, it is influenced by various Chinese geography books that were popular at the time. Third is the expansion and dissemination of knowledge through Chinese characters. The formal characteristics of the Chinese text ‘『Saminpilji』’ are as follows. First, it contains encyclopedic knowledge. Second, they are thoroughly pursuing a system for classifying items. Third, the item description method is used consistently. In addition, the content characteristics are as follows. First, the history was described at the beginning to supplement the composition and contents of the Korean version. Second, the author’s evaluation is often included at the end of each country’s explanation. Third, the names of things are summarized in detail. In conclusion, the basic reason for translating and publishing the Korean text into the Chinese text was the expansion and dissemination of knowledge. In other words, ‘『Saminpilji』’ is a unique publishing the Korean text into the Chinese text that contains historical elements in the new contents of modern geographic knowledge, incorporating historical elements in the new content of modern geographic knowledge, using Chinese characters, a universal character in East Asia.

본 논문의 목적은 한글이 보편화되기 시작하던 시기에 한역본 『사민필지』를 발간해야만 했던 이유를 밝히는 데 있다. 그리고 그 이유는 지리서에 세계사가 결합된 종합적 성격의 본격 유서 발간 취지에 있다고 판단하고, 『사민필지』의 유서적 특성을 도출하여 근대계몽기 지적 소양의 확대라는 목적이 『사민필지』 한문본 간행과 연관 있음을 밝히고자 하였다. 본론에서는 한문본 『사민필지』의 서문을 통해 편찬 의도와 그 서술 내용을 살펴보았고, 한글본과의 비교를 통한 한문본의 특성을 밝혔으며, 한문본 『사민필지』의 유서적 특성을 각각 내용과 형식의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 한문본의 편찬 의도는 첫째, 한글본에 역사를 편입하려는 의지. 둘째, 당시 유행하던 각종 한문 지리서의 영향. 셋째, 한문을 통한 지식의 확장 및 보급 등을 제시할 수 있다. 그 서술 내용은 일반적으로 한글본에는 누락된 역사 서술에 이어 해당 나라의 위치와 경계, 지형, 기후, 토산물, 언어, 정치체제, 수도와 주요 도시, 국민의 신분 등급과 생업, 통상 품목, 조세 수입, 군사력, 종교, 국가 인프라, 풍속 등이다. 한문본 『사민필지』를 유서로 볼 수 있는 형식적 특성은 첫째, 백과사전적 지식을 담고 있다는 점. 둘째, 항목별 분류 체계를 철저하게 추구하고 있다는 점. 셋째, 일관된 항목별 서술 방식을 준수하고 있다는 점 등이다. 그 내용적 특성은 첫째, 서두에 역사를 서술하여 한글본의 구성과 내용을 보완하였다는 점. 둘째, 각 국가별 설명의 말미에 작가의 평설이 포함되는 경우가 많다는 점. 셋째, 물명의 자세한 정리 등이다. 이와 같은 여러 내용을 종합할 때, 한글본을 한문본으로 번역해 출간한 근본적 이유는 지식의 확장과 보급에 있었다고 할 수 있다. 즉, 『사민필지』는 동아시아 보편 문자인 한자를 활용해 유서 편찬의 전통을 염두에 두고, 근대 지리 지식이라는 새로운 내용에 역사 요소를 포함시켜 동양의 전통적 형식에 담아낸 독특한 한역 텍스트라고 할 수 있다. 이는 근대계몽기에 전통으로의 회귀라는 측면에서 중요한 문화사적 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.
