The Written Dialogues by Dong du is an important document on the communication between Joseon communication envoys to Japan during the edo period. Through the written dialogue between Yinseyi and the Joseon envoys, we can vividly reveal the inheritance and rise and fall of Buddhism in Japan and Joseon from a new perspective. In four written conversations with Joseon envoys, Yinseyi periodically threw buddhist topics into the conversation, especially the rise and fall of Buddhism in Japan and the development of Buddhism in edo period are described. This paper is based on the Written Dialogues by Dongdu, which is collected in the National Archives of Japan. First, analyze the rise and fall of Buddhism in Japan before the 18th century. Secondly, review the development of Buddhism in Japan during the period of the Joseon communication envoys to Japan. Finally, analyze some of the insights of edo period monk-Yinseyi on the development of Buddhism on the Korean peninsula.

『동도필담』은 에도시기, 조선통신사가 일본에 갔을 때, 일본 문사들과 주고받은 중요한 필담 문헌 자료 중의 하나이다. 그중, 인세이(因靜)와 조선 사신들이 나눈 필담 실록(實錄)은 당시 불교가 일본과 조선 양국에서의 전승 양상 및 발전 맥락을 생생하게 들여다 볼 수 있는 중요한 창구로 된다. 조선 사신들과의 4차례 필담 교류 동안, 인세이는 불교에 관한 화제를 부단히 유도하고자 하였으며, 특히 불법(佛法)이 일본에서의 흥망성쇄, 내지 에도시기 불교의 발전 현황에 대해 수차례 언급하였다. 본고는 일본국립공문서관(日本國立公文書館)에 소장되어 있는 『동도필담』 문헌을 연구 저본으로 삼아, 우선, 『동도필담』에 체현된 18세기 이전 불법의 일본에서의 전파 역정(歷程)을 살펴볼 것이다. 다음, 계미통신사가 일본에 머무르는 당시 불교의 발전 상황에 대해 고찰할 것이다. 마지막으로, 일본 승려 인세이의 시선으로 바라보는 조선에서의 불교 발전상황 및 그의 기대치에 대해 살펴볼 것이다.
