The purpose of this study was to explore ‘dancer definition' which is important not only in dance studies but also in related legislations. For this purpose, this study examined discourses on dancers in academic research and institutions, and the definitions of dancers considered by Korean dance researchers. As research methods, extensive literature review and in-depth interviews were used. The results of the study revealed that, first, the definitions of dancers in academic discourses were dealt with by implicit consensus rather than by clear characterizations. Second, according to the social consensus that artists’ status and rights should be guaranteed, dancers were also included in the institutions. In this regard, it was found that the academic discourses and institutions related to the definitions of dancers were commonly centered on dancers who performed in the field. Third, although scholars of dance studies agreed the definitions of dancers should change depending on the socio-cultural shift, they claimed that the institutions need to first accept dancers who focus on non-commercial artistic activities. This study has significance in that it is a full-fledged study on the definitions of dancers that have been overlooked as well as a foundation for the preparation of relevant legislations.

본 연구의 목적은 무용연구는 물론이고 관련 법제에서도 중요한 ‘무용가 정의’에 대해 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 학술연구와 제도에 나타난 담론을 살펴보고, 국내 무용연구자들이 생각하는 무용가의 정의에 대해 알아보 았다. 연구방법으로는 광범위한 문헌조사와 심층면접을 활용하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 학술담론 속에서의 무용가 는 명확한 정의보다 암묵적 합의에 의해 다루어지고 있었다. 둘째, 예술가의 지위와 권리를 보장해 주어야 한 다는 사회적 합의에 따라 무용가 역시 제도에 포함되고 있었으며, 공연활동을 하는 실기무용가들이 중심에 위 치해 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 무용전문연구자들은 사회문화의 변화에 따라 무용가정의에도 변화가 있어야 한다는 데 동의하면서도, 제도와 관련해서는 비상업적인 예술활동에 집중하는 무용가들을 우선적으로 수용해 야 한다고 주장하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 그동안 간과되어온 무용가정의에 대한 본격적 연구임과 동시 에 관련 법제마련을 위한 초석이라는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
