There are two purposes to the present study. One purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness from previously published crime prevention through environmental design(CPTED) on fear of crime. Second, this study tried to empirically analyze whether of not the effects of CPTED on fear of crime are effective with controlling other variables. First, this review found mixed results. There are some evidenced that CPTED is effective in reducing fear of crime, but others studies could not find the effectiveness. Furthermore, the evidence base covered in the review has considerable limitations, because study quality is generally poor with very few studies using robust designs. Therefore, the scientific effects of CPTED on fear of crime are still inconclusive. Multiple regression techniques are used on survey of 2091 residents of 25 counties in Seoul to assess the effects of CPTED on fear of crime. Findings indicate that the effects of CPTED on fear of crime are present. Access control and natural surveillance among 4 CPTED factors survive among various variables. Finally, the relevances of these findings are discussed in terms of the subject of forthcoming research and local governmental policy.

이 연구의 목적은 크게 두 가지라 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 환경 설계를 통한 범죄 예방(CPTED) 기법이 범죄 두려움에 효과를 가지는가에 대해 선행 연구들을 평가해 보고자 한다. 둘째, 환경설계를 통한 범죄 예방(CPTED) 전략이 다른 변수들을 통제하였음에도 범죄 두려움에 영향을 미치는가를 경험적으로 분석해 보고자 하였다. 첫째, 효과성에 대한 선행 연구들에 대한 평가는 일관된 결과를 보여주지 못하였다. 몇몇 연구들에서는 CPTED가 범죄 두려움에 효과적이라는 결과를 보여주었지만, 그렇지 않은 연구 결과 역시 발견되었다. 나아가 평가에 포함된 연구들이 질적으로 높은 수준의 연구들을 포함하지 않고 있기 때문에 연구의 결론은 한계를 가질 수밖에 없다. 결과적으로 범죄 두려움에 대한 CPTED의 과학적 효과가 있다는 결론을 내리기에는 시기상조라고 할 수 있다. 서울의 25개 구에서 수집한 2091명의 설문 데이터를 가지고, 다중 회귀분석 방법을 이용하여 CPTED가 범죄 두려움에 어떤 영향을 있는가를 분석해 보았다. 연구 결과는 기존의 범죄 두려움에 영향을 주는 변수들을 통제한 후에도 CPTED가 범죄 두려움에 영향을 미치고 있었음이 나타났다. 4가지 CPTED 요소 중에서 2가지, 즉 접근 통제와 자연적 감시는 범죄 두려움을 줄일 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 연구의 결론에서는 이러한 연구 결과와 더불어 앞으로의 연구방향 그리고 경찰과 지방 정부를 위한 정책적 측면에서의 제안이 제시되었다.
