This paper is an exploration of Christian spirituality for the public role of the Church which has become an increasingly important theological topic in recent years. For this discussion, this paper focuses on the study of spirituality by Philip Sheldrake who conducted in-depth research on the relationship between Christian spirituality and social participation. Sheldrake concentrates on the cities and the communal life in the modern day, thereby exploring what it means to be a spiritual space and to restore God's initiative. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify what spiritual values must be in the city in order for it to be a space faithful to the identity of God's city that is to be built on this earth. In addition, it is to present the spirituality of reconciliation as the spiritual virtue necessary for the current state of today’s society that lives in constant conflict. As a way of furthering the discussion, this paper examines Sheldrake’s perspective on human beings as a foundation for understanding spirituality, understanding the city, the values needed to build a spiritual city, and the spirituality of reconciliation and hospitality. Human beings, the foundation of Sheldrake's spirituality, are Christ-centered, holistic and interactive bodies who resembles the Triune God. The truly holistic being is God, and human beings are imbued with the image of God in their hearts, so they feel perfect in harmony and unity, not in division and opposition. Sheldrake considers the city as a neutral space. In order for a city to be God's, it must be united around shared spiritual values. As it happens, it can be a community of people based on mutuality, a society that pursues the common good. Sheldrake understands reconciliation in an integrated way with hospitality in the sense that hospitality recognizes "commonality" rather than "difference" among people, and that it can begin when people accept the differences of others. Moreover, this paper suggests the ministry of reconciliation in ancient monasteries and the monastic rules providing specific guidelines for the spirituality of reconciliation and hospitality as an example for modern churches.

본 논문은 최근 중요한 신학 주제인 교회의 공적 역할에 대한 기독교 영성학적 모 색의 하나이다. 이 논의를 위해 기독교 영성과 사회참여의 관계에 대해 깊이 있는 연 구성과를 보여준 영성학자 필립 셸드레이크의 영성 연구를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 특 히 그가 최근 집중하고 있는 주제인 도시와 공동체적 삶에 초점을 두면서 도시가 영 적인 공간이 된다는 것, 하나님의 주도권을 회복한다는 것의 의미가 무엇인지를 살펴 보았다. 따라서 이 논문의 목적은 지상의 도시가 이 땅 위에 건설되어야 할 하나님의 도성이라는 정체성에 충실한 공간이 되려면 어떤 영적 가치들이 도시 안에 있어야 하는가를 밝히면서, 초갈등시대를 살아가는 오늘의 도시에 필요한 영적 가치로 화해의 영성을 제시하는 것이다. 논의를 전개하는 방법으로는 셸드레이크 영성의 근거가 되는 인간관, 도시에 대한 이해, 영적 도시를 만드는 데 필요한 가치들을 살펴보고, 화해와 환대의 영성에 관해 살펴보았다. 셸드레이크 영성의 기초가 되는 인간은 그리스도 중심의 통전적 존재이 며 삼위일체 하나님을 닮은 상호성을 가진 존재이다. 그래서 관계적이고 공동체적이 며 사회적 존재이다. 진정으로 통전적인 존재는 하나님이고 인간은 그 마음에 하나님 의 형상이 새겨져 있으므로 분열과 반목이 아니라 조화와 화합 속에서 온전함을 느끼 게 된다. 따라서 사람들은 개인 간에, 공동체에서 화해를 이루기를 기대한다. 셸드레이크가 보는 도시는 중립적 공간이다. 따라서 도시가 하나님의 것이 되기 위해서는 공유된 영적 가치를 중심으로 화합해야 한다. 그러할 때 상호성에 기반을 둔 사람들의 공동체, 공동선을 추구하는 사회가 될 수 있다. 셸드레이크는 화해는 사 람들 사이에 ‘다름’이 아닌 ‘공통성’을 인정하고, 다름을 용납할 때 시작될 수 있다는 의미에서 환대를 화해와 통합적으로 이해하고 있다. 그리고 현대의 교회가 모델로 삼 을 수 있는 사례로 고대 수도원의 모습을 보면서, 수도원 규칙서를 통해 화해와 환대 의 영성에 관한 구체적인 지침들을 살펴보았다.
