This study focuses on the designation of Cho Kuk, the Justice Minister, which experienced an extreme dichotomy in the public opinion of Korean citizens. Cho Kuk has already attracted the media's attention as being considered as a potential candidate for the next presidential election, especially since President Moon's nomination. Afterwards, newspaper articles about Minister Cho has increased. However, Minister Cho took his role when his wife and relatives got involved in allegations of misconduct. And this became controversial, his support group and anti group having serious conflict. With this in mind, during the tenure of the Justice Minister, when the public opinion of Minister Cho was concentrated, we analyzed the nation's top 10 national daily newspapers’ (Kyunghyang Shinmun, Kukmin Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Munhwa Ilbo, Seoul Shinmun, Segye Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, Hankyoreh, Hankook Ilbo) position through editorial analysis. We believe it would be easier to understand the newspaper company’s position through private analysis rather than general article analysis. For this purpose, from the day after the inauguration of the Minister Cho to the day after retirement from September 10th to October 15th, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis of editorials were conducted through the editorial analysis of the national daily newspapers. The number of editorials was evenly distributed around 20 articles each in all 10 national daily newspapers. Analysis of 204 editorial keywords in 10 daily newspapers showed that the most conservative and progressive newspapers have been extremely biased, whereas neutral sided newspapers dealing with a variety of subjects and trying to avoid extremes. On the other hand, in keyword analysis, it was discovered that according to the position of newspapers, even the frequently used same words used for completely different claims and interpretations. Lastly, as a result of semantic network analysis, it is clear that certain similar words are arranged closely to each other according to the position of the newspaper and used to emphasize their tone.

본 연구는 우리 국민들의 여론이 극단적으로 양분화 되는 현상을 경험한 ‘조국 법무부 장관’ 임명에 대해 초점을 맞추고 있다. 조국 장관은 이미 유력한 차기 대권주자 후보로 거론되면서 언론의 주목을 받아왔는데, 특히 법무부 장관 후보로 지명되면서 관련 보도가 급증했다. 그러나 조 장관은 부인을 비롯한 친인척들의 비리 의혹이 불거진 가운데 취임해 각종 논란에 휩싸였고 지지 세력과 반대 세력은 첨예한 갈등을 보이게 되었다. 이러한 점에 착안해 조국 장관에 대한 여론 형성이 집중된 시기인 법무부 장관 재임 기간 게재된 국내 10대 중앙 종합일간지(경향신문, 국민일보, 동아일보, 문화일보, 서울 신문, 세계일보, 조선일보, 중앙일보, 한겨레, 한국일보) 사설을 통해 각 사의 입장을 분 석해 보고자 했다. 일반 기사보다는 사설 분석을 통해 신문사의 입장을 파악하기 용이 할 것이라 판단했는데, 조 장관의 취임 다음 날부터 퇴임 다음 날인 9월10일∼10월15일 까지 중앙 종합일간지에 게재된 조 장관 관련 사설 전체를 대상으로 양적 분석과 질적 분석을 실시하였다. 신문별 사설 수의 경우 10개 일간지 모두 20개 내외의 고른 분포를 보였고, 전체 204 개의 사설 키워드를 중심으로 분석한 결과 보수(중도보수)와 진보 성향의 신문들은 대 부분 극단적인 주장이 많았던 반면, 중도 성향의 신문들은 비교적 다양한 주제를 다루 며 극단으로 쏠리지 않으려 노력했음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 키워드/TF-IDF 분석을 통 해 빈번하게 사용된 동일한 단어라 하더라도 신문의 성향에 따라 서로 완전히 다른 주 장과 해석에 활용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 의미 네트워크 분석 결과 신문의 성향에 따라 유사한 특정 단어들이 가까이 배치되어 있어 자신들의 논조를 강조하기 위해 사용되고 있음을 밝힐 수 있었다.
