The purpose of this study is to investigate the implications of the concept of adult education by focusing on the meaning search of 'generation' presented by German sociologist K. Mannheim. In the meantime, generation in education is a generational role that is transmitted and developed successively so that cultural tradition and social knowledge essential for the survival of society are not cut off. However, the world is still in a generation conflict due to the constant change of modern society, the intergenerational heterogeneity and the civilization conflict due to the developed technology. In this regard, the necessity of the study of generations has been continually evolving all the time, and this study critically examined the theory of the generation, including the critical review of the generation theory proposed by the existing German scholar K. Mannheim, I would like to present various aspects of the generation theories by examining the aspects of the inferior generation theory. In this study, we hope that the concept of generation will be basic data about the generation problem of our society, where the necessity of generation research is emphasized as the role of category to analyze social culture, And to suggest some implications for adult education research and lifelong education research.

본 연구에서는 독일 사회학자 K. Mannheim이 제시한 ‘세대’의 의미탐색을 중점으로 하여 성인교육이론에서 어떠한 함의를 갖는지를 탐구한다. 그간 교육학에서 세대는 Schleiermacher이래 전통의 유지인가 아니면 전통의 개선인가라는 문제와 직접적으로 관련 된 교육학의 핵심주제로 자리잡아 왔다. 하지만 교육학적 근본문제와 더불어 현대사회는 끊임없 는 변화와 함께 발달된 기술력에 따른 세대 간 이질성, 문명갈등 등 세계는 여전히 세대적 갈등에 놓여 있다는 사회학적 시각이 강하게 요구되고 있다. 특히 한국사회의 경우 최근 세대 간의 갈등이 첨예화되는 가운데 세대 연구의 필요성이 전면적으로 끊임없이 대두되고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연 구는 세대이론을 사회학적으로 초기에 검토한 K. Mannheim의 세대이론에 대한 비판적 검토를 시도 한다. Mannheim에 따르면 세대는 특정한 특징이 세대단위를 지니며 이에 본 연구를 통해 세대 개념이 사회문화를 분석하는 범주의 역할로서 세대 연구의 필요성이 부각되고 있는 우리사회의 세대 문제에 대해 교육학적 접근으로서의 기초적 자료 가 될 것으로 기대하며, 더 나아가 향후의 성인교육에서 세대 문제연구에 대한 진행방향 및 성인교 육연구, 평생교육연구에 어떠한 시사점을 제공할 수 있는지에 대해 도출해보고자 한다.
