The purposes of this study were to examine the meaning of university life of Uzbekistan students studying in Korean higher education institutions and their adaptation to university life and to provide policy recommendations. For this, 10 foreign students from Uzbekistan who are studying in metropolitan and regional universities were selected for in-depth interviews about their motivation for studying in Korea, difficulties in Korean universities, and their future plans after finishing their study. As a result, the motivation for Uzbekistan students is the interest in and aspiration to Korean culture, the influence from the family and friends, and the preparation for the future goals. The difficulties to adopt into Korean university life were academic adaptation, human relationship, economy support, and discrimination. Especially, Uzbekistan students studying in Korean universities experienced serious academic difficulties due to lack of background knowledge about Korean history and social phenomenon, inadequate interpersonal relationship with Korean students and professors due to cultural differences. Furthermore, they also faced discriminations due to religious and cultural differences. This study recommends that universities should provide more effective Korean language courses to foreign students, provide programs for improving interpersonal relationship between Korean students and international students, provide more programs that can reduce discrimination against foreign students, and expand the scholarship system to international students and promote sharing information regarding to scholarships.

본 연구는 한국에서 유학 중인 우즈베키스탄 대학원생들의 유학생활 의미와 대학생 활 적응 양상을 알아보고, 이를 통해 우즈베키스탄 학생들이 유학생활 동안 겪는 문제 들을 분석하고자 하였으며, 나아가 이를 위한 해결방안을 제언하고자 하였다. 이에 따라 우즈베키스탄 유학생의 한국 유학동기와 대학생활의 어려움에 대하여 수도권 및 지방 대학에 재학 중인 10명의 우즈베키스탄 대학원생에 대한 면담을 진행하였다. 연구결과, 우즈베키스탄 유학생들의 한국대학 진학 동기는 한국 문화에 대한 관심과 동경, 가족 및 주변 지인들의 영향, 미래의 목표를 위한 준비로 나타났으며, 한국 대학생활에서 겪 게 되는 어려움으로는 학업관련 어려움, 대인관계 문제, 경제적 어려움, 차별 문제로 나타났다. 특히 배경 지식 없이 공부를 하다 보니 학업적 어려움을 많이 경험하고 있었 으며, 문화적 차이로 인한 한국인 학생 및 교수와의 대인관계가 원활하지 않은 경험을 하고 있었다. 또한 종교적, 문화적 차이로 인한 차별도 겪고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 를 위한 정책제언들이 제시되었다.
