The purpose of this study was to introduce the concept of academic service-learning, review its background theory, and examine the recent trends in order to make suggestions that tertiary education institutes develop and establish better educational communities in Korea. First, this study defined the concept of academic service-learning based on Kolb’s experiential learning theory. Next, this study examined the elements of academic service-learning and its positive effects through a review of a wide range of empirical research studies on academic service-learning. Also, this study presented instructional models and procedures for instructors to design courses, adopting academic service-learning projects to their classes. Next, this study reviewed the roles of higher education institutes in order to support instructors to implement academic service-learning projects in their courses. Finally, this study explored example activities of academic service-learning and a course as a case. Therefore, this study can provide a basis for higher education institutes to design and integrate academic service-learning courses for students’ civic engagement, students’ growth, and institutional development.

본 연구는 대학-지역사회 간의 연계와 협력의 방안으로서 미국에서 최근 수 십년동 안 관심과 교육적 투자가 이루어지고 있는 아카데믹 서비스-러닝(academic service-learning)의 개념 및 발전 동향을 분석하여 향후 대학과 지역사회 간의 따뜻한 교육공동체를 실현하기 위한 아카데믹 서비스-러닝 적용 방안을 제시하는데 목적을 두 었다. 이를 위하여 아카데믹 서비스-러닝이 수십 년간 발전해온 미국에서의 아카데믹 서비스-러닝의 개념, 이론적 배경, 구성요소, 특성 및 효과를 살펴보았다. 또한, 대학에 서 서비스-러닝을 실천할 수 있도록 서비스-러닝의 수업설계 방법, 절차 및 평가방법을 제시하였고, 이를 위하여 각 대학과 지역사회의 협력기관의 역할을 살펴보았다. 마지막 으로 미국에서 많이 실행되고 있는 서비스-러닝의 실천적 사례를 제시다. 연구 결과 아 카데믹 서비스-러닝의 개념을 정립하였고 바람직한 사례를 제시함으로서 앞으로 우리나 라에서 대학-지역사회 간의 연계 및 협력을 확대하여 실천함으로서 보다 따뜻한 교육공 동체를 발전시켜 나가기 위한 한 가지 방안으로서 꾸준히 발전할 가능성을 보여주었다. 본 연구는 지역사회와 연계한 대학교 교육 프로그램의 개발 및 그 절차 등을 수립하는 데 필요한 기초자료가 될 수 있다는데 의의가 있다.
