The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of vocational identity of two vocational education teacher and the relationship between the teachers’identity formation and social, historical and private contextual backgrounds. The researcher applied the life story interview approach to this study, and two teachers with more than 30 years career in Technical High School were interviewed. The data were mostly collected through the in-depth interviews and transcribed by the researcher. The results of this study were as follows. The aspects of vocational identity of participants were identified that one was subject matter expert and the other was pedagogical expert as a teacher. The major life events were the government industrial policies, National Skills Competition, experiences as a school innovator and overcomes against poverty. Although life spans of participants were different, the participants shared a common value. They believed that all educational practices must be done for the students’ growth and happiness.

본 연구의 목적은 두 명의 공업고등학교 평교사의 직업 생애를 살펴봄으로써 그들의 직 업정체성과 그 형성에 영향을 미친 사회적, 역사적, 개인적 맥락을 이해하는데 있다. 이를 위하여 30년 이상 공업고등학교에 재직한 교사 2명을 연구참여자로 선정하였으며, 심층면 담, 기록물(인사기록카드, 각종 수상기록과 언론 보도 기록 등) 분석을 통해 연구참여자들 의 생애를 기반으로 직업정체성 형성과정을 재구성하였다. 연구참여자들의 직업정체성은 내용전문가로서의 정체성과 학생 지지자로서의 정체성이 뚜렷이 드러났다. 직업정체성 형 성에 영향을 미친 맥락은 1970년대 산업화 시기 정부의 공업고등학교를 통한 기능인력양 성 정책과 기능반 지도교사 경험, 혁신자로서의 경험, 개인적 빈곤과 이를 해결하기 위한 노력으로서의 교육이었다. 두 연구참여자의 개인적 배경, 관심분야와 행동양식의 결은 다 소 다르지만 공통점은 교육을 함에 있어 학생을 최우선으로 놓았다는 것이다. 학생이 있기 에 교사가 있다고 인식하였고, 교사의 모든 교육적 행위는 학생의 성숙과 행복을 위해서 수행되는 것이어야 한다고 보았다.
