This study covers the relation between the rise of the Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna, SD), a nationalist conservative populist party, and the country's population change. Sweden had an economic boom after World War II and the government had an active immigration policy to meet the demand of labour market and population decline ever since. After the 70s, there was a transition from labour immigration to more of an immigration based on refugee. Though most right-wing populist parties in Europe adopting anti-immigration policy gained popularity, Sweden Democrats remained on the fringe of the Swedish politics despite the county's long history of immigration. The Sweden Democrats crossed the 4% threshold necessary for parliamentary representation for the first time in 2010 and became the third-largest party in 2018 after two decades since its foundation in 1988 changing Swedish political landscape. The study scrutinizes the drive behind the rise of the Sweden Democrats by referencing the immigration and integration policies over time in addition to the party's reframing strategy as an "only opposition party" in Sweden.
