Walter Crane is an artist who has engaged in various artistic work in England during the Victorian era, and, above all, he is recognized to have significantly contributed to the development of modern children's picture books. The 50 picture books of Walter Crane clearly show the unique aesthetic sense, design sense and styles. The books are independent and comprehensive visual art works on their own, reflecting his thoughts and intention that our society and human life can be changed in a beautiful manner by the means of arts. I think that this is clearly shown in his initial art works. In this thesis, I regard the times from 1865 to 1870 when Walter Crane began to work on toy book series in collaboration with Edmund Evans, the engraving artist and professional printing artist, as his initial days of artistic work and intend to analyze the characteristics of the work during the age and explore its meaning. The Chapter 2 briefly looks at the change in the landscape of England publishing market in the 1860s and development of children picture books. In addition, I also would shed light on the background and process of the start and success of the manufacture of toy book series by Walter Crane. The Chapter 3 looks at the formative character of early works by Walter Crane in terms of three perspectives: 1) composition and editing of the book; 2) setting of the scene and expression of characters; 3) decorative feature and Orientalism. In the process of analysis, I would like to highlight design perspective of Walter Crane, his stylistic features, and his influence exerted on artists during the same age and in the future.

월터 크레인은 빅토리아시대의 영국에서 다양한 미 술활동을 펼친 예술가로서, 무엇보다도 근대 어린이 그림책 발전에 크게 공헌한 선구자로 평가되고 있다. 크레인이 남긴 50여 권의 그림책들은 특유의 미의식 과 디자인 감각과 양식적 특징을 훌륭하게 잘 보여준 다. 그 책들에는 한권의 책이 그 자체로 하나의 독립 적이고 종합적인 시각예술작품이며, 미술을 통해 우 리 사회와 인간의 삶을 아름답게 변화시킬 수 있다는 그의 생각과 의도가 잘 반영되어 있다. 이러한 점은 그의 활동 초기 작품에서부터 이미 분명히 드러나고 있다. 이 논문에서 필자는 크레인이 판각화가이자 인쇄술 자인 에드먼드 에번스와 협동 제작하여 토이 북 시리 즈를 선보이기 시작하는 1865년부터 1870년경까지 를 그의 활동 초기로 보고, 이 시기 작품의 성격을 분석하고 그 의미를 고찰하였다. 제 2장에서는 1860년대에 이루어진 영국 출판시장 의 변화와 어린이 그림책의 발달에 대해 간략하나마 살펴보았다. 또한 크레인이 토이 북 제작을 시작하고 성공을 이루게 되는 배경 및 과정에 대해서도 언급하 였다. 이어 3장에서는 크레인 초기작들의 조형적 성 격을 책의 구성 및 편집, 장면의 설정 및 인물 표현, 그리고 장식성 및 오리엔탈리즘이라는 세 가지 측면 에서 고찰하였다. 분석과정에서 크레인의 디자인관, 양식적 특징, 동시대와 이후의 화가들에게 미친 영향 등을 부각해 보고자 하였다.
