This article analyses characteristics of “Ch’aekkwal (Compilations of references for the Civil service exam).” Prior to a follow-up research on a development of intellectual world in the late Joseon era, this article examines three widely-distributed published books (Gyǒngsǒ Yuch’o, Gyǒngsa Jipsǒl, and Okch’an) and a manuscript (Sǒngnisǒl Jimnok), clarifying the general characteristics of Ch’aekkwal. Ch’aekkwal compiled references for narrow knowledge on fields of statecraft and Neo-Confucianism rather than aim for broad knowledge. They cited or re-cited authoritative books and did not attach personal theories of the editor. Their editor are unknown, since they were published in needs for a commercial interest or an educational purpose for family members, with a lack of an awareness as an author. Ch’aekkwal show a bibliographic boundary of the late Joseon intellects. They are major historical material for a research on cultural history, with an influence on academical and literary areas of the contemporary Joseon.

본고는 조선 후기 지식 세계의 발전 양상을 분석하는 연구의 일환으로, 일반 사대부 지식의 기저를 형성한 과거시험 참고서용 유서를 ‘策括’로 명명하고, 그 특성을 분석함으로써 해당 서적군의 범주를 보다 명확히 한다. 刊行本 『經書類抄』ㆍ『經史集說』ㆍ『玉纂』과 筆寫本 『性理說集錄』을 중심으로 논의를 전개한다. 책괄은 과거 시험에 출제되는 典章制度 관련 정보를 집록했다. 博學을 추구하지 않고, 性理學 학설을 중심에 두었다. 권위 있는 서적과 그 학설을 직접 또는 2차 인용하고 편찬자의 私見을 첨부하지 않았다. 조선의 類書 편찬 전통을 계승해서 ‘門’의 항목을 두고, ‘用人’ 등 試題로 빈출한 주제를 수록했다. 이들 서적은 편찬자와 편찬 시기가 알려져 있지 않으며, 저자의식에 강한 바탕을 두기보다는 상업적 또는 개인적 필요에 의해 제작․유통되었다. 책괄은 조선 일반 지식 세계의 문헌학적 경계선을 보여준다. 동시에 類說․科詩 등 학문적․문학적 영역의 성립과 발전에 영향을 끼쳐, 총체적인 문화사 연구의 한 축이 된다.
