(1) Seven sets of Japanese early types are existing to date in Japan. They are somewhat different in the body size, making it very hard to use them together. (2) Each set is kept in storage boxes and arranged in either Chinese alphabetical order or Japanese pronunciation order. (3) Types include big type, small type, Japanese character type, multiple-character type, engraved type, and symbol type. (4) The body of almost all the types is regular cube shape. The edge of the character face was not carved flat, but slantly cut by the depth of 1.1∼10.2mm. Almost all the characters did not fully fill the character face. Each had its own variation. (5) The type bottoms include flat shape, inverted V shape, ladder shape, and rarely semi-cylindrical shape. However, the groove height is not constant and within 5.0mm, seemingly functional for the convenience of typesetting. (6) The character stroke was carved in a gentle slope, with a few cases in the slope of 30 degree. (7) The depth of carving was 0.1∼2.5mm and very shallow, with an average depth of 1mm. (8) The results of the study on typography through the printing edition are verified by various parts of the typesetting.

(1) 일본 현존 고활자는 7종이 있다. 이들은 동체의 크기가 약간씩 차이가 있어서 혼용이 거의 불가능하다. (2) 각각이 보관용 상자에, 한자의 부수와 필획 순 또는 일본어 발음 순으로 배열되어 있다. (3) 활자의 종류는 대자․소자․假名(일본 문자) 활자․연각 활자․음각 활자․기호 활자 등이 있다. (4) 활자의 동체는 대부분 방정한 육면체이다. 문자면의 문자 가장자리는 평평히 다듬지 않고 사선으로 1.1∼ 10.2mm 정도로 깊이 깎아내렸다. 문자는 거의 대부분이 문자면에 가득 차지 않았다. 그 편차는 각각이었다. (5) 활자의 배면은 平平한 형태, 역V자형, 사다리꼴형, 드물게 반원통형 등이 있다. 그러나 그 높이가 균일하지 않고, 5.0mm 이내로 높지 않아서 조판의 편리를 위한 기능 정도로 보인다. (6) 필획을 조각하기 위한 산의 각도는 30° 정도의 경우도 보일만큼 완만한 경우가 많다. (7) 산의 깊이는 0.1∼2.5mm로, 대체로의 평균은 1mm 정도로 매우 얕다. (8) 여러 조판용 부속품은 판본을 통한 인쇄 기술 연구의 내용을 증명하고 있다.
