This study tried to examine the impact of media coverage and social distance on public opinion on support for North Korean defectors. To this end, this study verified whether media’s reports on North Korean defectors act as a factor in changing public opinion on the government's support for North Korean defectors, based on time series data extracted from news reports by Chosun Ilbo, Hankyoreh, MBC and KBS during the period 2007 to 2018, and the unification perception survey by the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies. The results of the study are as follows. First, media coverage by Hankyoreh, KBS and MBC was a significant predictor for public opinion on support for North Korean defectors. Second, it was found that the social distance to North Korean defectors acts as a factor influencing public opinion on support for North Korean defectors. Third, the number of North Korean defectors entering to South Korea did not appear to be statistically significant in the public opinion on support for North Korean defectors. These findings have implications for the importance of media coverage and social distance in relation to the social integration and government policies for North Korean defectors.

이 연구는 북한이탈주민에 관한 언론 보도 분석과 함께 언론 보도와 북한이 탈주민에 대한 사회적 거리감이 정부의 북한이탈주민 지원에 대한 의견에 어 떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고자 했다. 이를 위해 2007~2018년의 기간 동안 조선일보, 한겨레신문, MBC, KBS의 북한이탈주민에 대한 보도와 통일 평화연구원의 ‘통일의식조사’ 자료에서 추출한 시계열 데이터를 토대로 북 한이탈주민에 대한 언론 보도와 사회적 거리가 북한이탈주민을 위한 정부의 지원에 대한 의견을 변화시키는 요인으로 작용하는지를 검증했다. 연구 결과 를 보면, 첫째, 한겨레신문, KBS, MBC의 보도가 정부의 북한이탈주민 지원에 대한 의견에 영향을 미치는 유의미한 예측 변인인 것으로 분석됐다. 둘째, 북 한이탈주민에 대한 사회적 거리가 북한이탈주민 지원에 대한 의견에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 작용하는 것으로 확인됐다. 셋째, 북한이탈주민 입국자 수는 북한이탈주민 지원에 대한 의견에 대해 통계적 유의성이 없는 것으로 나타났 다. 이 같은 결과는 북한이탈주민의 사회적 통합 및 정부 정책과 관련해 언론 보도와 사회적 거리의 중요성을 환기시키는 의미가 있다고 하겠다.
