This paper begins with critically illuminating the logic of Lee Young-hoon’s “anti-Japanese tribalism”. His view was taken directly from Andre Schmidt’s understanding of the "modernist" nation concept found in “Korea between Empires 1895-1919”. Anthony Smith attempted to critically illuminate the modernist views represented by Ernest Gelner, Benedict Anderson, Eric Hobbsbom, while dividing various views of the nation into primordialism, perennialism, modernism, and ethnic symbolism. In this paper, I actively refer to Anthony Smith’s view and discuss that in the case of Korea, it is likely that the history of this national level community and collective was formed and developed before the so-called “colonial modernization” period. In particular, this paper attempted to reveal that Shin Chaeho's historical studies, criticized by Lee Young-hoon and Andre Schmidt, were not only equipped with method of interpretation or criticism of historical narrative texts, but also based on specific literature studies. This was not sufficient in “Anti-Japanese Tribalism” or “Korea between Empires 1895-1919”. Discussion of the concept of “nation” and its formation in Korea will require further exploration in the future, and without this, the deductive application of any unilateral discourse to Korean history should be avoided.

이 논문은 이영훈의 『반일 종족주의』의 한국 민족주의 비판과 관련하여, 이 시각이 앙드레 슈미드의 저술 『제국 그 사이의 한국 1895-1919』에 나타나는 ‘근대주의’ 민족 이해를 그대로 가져온 것임을 드러내면서, 이를 앤서니 스미스의 민족 이론의 제 유형에 관한 논리에 근거하여 비판하고자 한 것이다. 앤서니 스미스는 민족에 관한 여러 견해를, 원초주의, 영속주의, 근대주의, 종족 상징주의 등으로 나누면서 특히 어네스트 겔너, 베네딕트 앤더슨, 에릭 홉스봄 등으로 대표되는 근대주의적 견해를 비판적으로 조명하고자 했다. 필자는 이 논문에서 그의 견해를 적극적으로 참조하면서 한국의 경우 이 민족적 수준의 공동체, 집합체의 역사가 이른바 ‘식민지적 근대화’ 이전에 형성, 전개되었을 가능성이 높을 수 있음을 논의하고자 했다. 특히 이 논문은 이영훈이나 앙드레 슈미드에 의해 비판을 받는 신채호의 역사 연구가 역사 텍스트 해석 방법이나 비판 방법 등을 갖춘 것이었을 뿐 아니라 구체적인 문헌 연구에 기반을 둔 논증 논리에 입각해 있음을 드러내고자 했다. 이것은 『반일 종족주의』나 『제국 그 사이의 한국 1895-1919』에는 충분히 갖추어져 있지 못한 것이었다. 한국에서의 ‘민족’의 개념이나 그 형성 과정에 대한 논의는 앞으로도 더 구체적인 탐구를 필요로 하는 것이고, 이것 없이 어떤 일방적인 담론적 견해를 한국사에 연역적으로 적용하는 태도는 지양되어야 한다.
