This thesis is another attempt to show how to be intertwined(the chiam) of the visible and the invisible in Merleau-Ponty's late philosophy, which has been especially influenced by Saussure's semiology. As tracing the influence of Saussure we can make the ambiguity of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy clear and can introduce the uncompleted project of his own social views based on the semiology. Saussure's semiology can be summed up as that and said in other words. The sign consists of the signifiant and the signifié, according to Merleau-Ponty, the signifiant is to the visible, the signifié is to the invisible, both are intertwined, which Saussure called the arbitrairity. 1. Saussure's definition of the sign(as far as he ruled out the other factors except the signifiant and the signifié) implicates the reduction phenomenological in Merleau-Ponty's body-subject philosophy. 2. The arbitrairity of signs implicates the ambiguous relation(difference) between the signs and the significations in Merleau-Ponty's language philosophy and Plato's dialogues about language. 3. Saussure's 'system of difference' implicates the Lacan's insights about the mirror image stage in child psychology and the being of the écart(difference), that is the invisible in Merleau-Ponty. 4. Saussure's langue(invisible) is important and intertwined with parol(visible) as much in Merleau-Ponty, if the psychological prejudices of Saussure's semiology should be taken off 5. The tacit cogito of Merleau-Ponty implicates the certainty of langue(and parol), that is Lebenswelt, especially the being of the difference and the invisible. It is totally different from the cogito of words in Decarte.
