The Hangeul calligraphy, Gungche was not suddenly formed by any one person or a group of certain class. After Hunminjeongeum was proclaimed, the writing style of Hangeul began to appear as a practical writing style with an Eastern conical brush, and the signs of the change to Gungche, resulting in standard pattern through the hands of a lot of people. The role of members of the royal family is very important in this process. Their own handwriting already showed the figure of Gungche, and they provided an environment for training the court lady as scribe, so that they could learn it thoroughly. A standard patter of Gungche was settled in this process.Nevertheless, the definition of Gungche as the writing style that administratrix had learned or the writing style that the court ladies had learned, was from the fact that they were not aware of Korea's unique cultural tradition and did not see the history of Korean calligraphy. In addition, this is because it was uncritically taken for Japanese colonialism.All this is partly due to the lack of sufficient research on Hangeul calligraphy. This paper was approached from a more common perspective to dispel the concept defined from the narrow and fragmentary view of Gungche and to define the correct concept. Based on historical vicissitudes, philosophical grounds, and aesthetic perspectives, I discussed the characters of Gungche and tried to draw up a correct conceptual definition.

한글서예 궁체는 어떠한 한 사람이나 한 계층의 집단에 의해 일시에 갑자기 형성된 것이 아니다. 훈민정음이 반포된 이후 원추형의 모필 붓으로 실용의 문자로 사용되면서 이미 궁체로의 조짐은 보이기 시작하여 많은 사람의 손을 거치면서 궁체의 정형화된 법도가 생기게 되었다. 이 과정에 왕실 구성원의 역할은 매우 중요하였다. 그들이 직접 쓴 글씨에 이미 궁체의 모습이 나타났으며, 서사상궁들을 훈련시킬 수 있는 환경을 제공하여 철저한 학습을 할 수 있게 하였다. 이 과정에 정형화된 궁체가 정착할 수 있게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 궁체를 ‘女官들이 학습하던 글씨’, 혹은 ‘궁녀들이 배우던 글씨’라고 정의하는 것은 한국의 고유한 문화전통으로서의 지위를 의식하지 못하고 한글서예사를 통시적으로 보지 못한데서 기인한다. 또한 이러한 현상은 일제의 식민사관적 사유를 무비판적으로 받아들여 誤用하였기 때문이다. 이러한 모든 원인은 한글서예에 관한 연구가 아직 충분히 이루어지지 않았기 때문이기도 하다. 본 논문은 궁체에 관한 편협적이고 단편적인 시각에서 정의 내려진 개념을 불식시키고 올바른 개념의 정의를 내리고자 좀 더 통시적 시각에서 접근하였다. 역사적 변천 · 철학적 근거 · 미학적 관점을 바탕으로 궁체의 풍격을 논하고 개념정의를 도출하려고 시도하였다.
