With the strengthening of the French colonial rule in the late 19th century, the Vietnamese intellectuals realized that a new way of fighting was needed as the struggles of the past were no longer valid. Among them, Neo-Confucian patriots tried to win the independence and sovereignty of the people through new political ideology education, military training, and literary activities based on the new book that was imported from China and the example of the reform of Japan. Although Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh were the representative figures of this group, since there is a clear difference between the political lines and the struggle method, they were also the symbolic figure to understand the value of the whole intellectual class in Vietnam and especially the nationalist elite group and the similarities, differences and the limits of the anti-French movement. Therefore, this paper briefly comprehends the process of the uprising that Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh played at the beginning of the 20th century, compares the similarities and differences between the two, examines the historical significance it has for Vietnamese national liberation.

19세기말 프랑스 식민통치가 강화되면서 베트남 지식층은 과거 방식의 투쟁이 더 이상 유효하지 않으며 새로운 방식의 항쟁이 필요함을 자각하였다. 그 가운데 신유학 애국주의자들은 중국을 통해 들어온 신서와 일본의 유신 개혁의 사례를 바탕으로 새로운 정치사상교육, 군사 훈련, 문예 활동 등을 통해 민족의 독립과 주권을 쟁취하기 위한 필사의 노력을 기울였다. 판보이쩌우와 판쭈찐은 이 집단의 대표적인 인물들로 정치노선과 투쟁방식에서는 극명한 차이를 보이고 있으나 당시 베트남 지식층 전체와 특히 민족주의 엘리트 집단의 가치관, 항쟁 운동에서의 유사성과 차이점 그리고 한계를 이해하는데 상징적인 인물이기도 했다. 따라서 이 논문은 당시 판보이쩌우와 판쭈찐이 20세기초에 국내외를 넘나들면서 벌였던 항쟁과정을 간략히 이해하고 이들이 보인 유사점과 차이점을 비교하면서 그것이 베트남 민족해방사에 갖는 역사적 의의를 고찰하고자 한다.
