The purpose of this study is to discuss the historical process of the generation and major features of Donghak. The contents of this study were as follows. First, the causes of Donghak were dealt with externally and internally. Second, the main characteristics of Donghak’s generation dealt with the protection of the state. Third, it deals with the historical meaning of Donghak. The results of this study were as follows. First, Donghak emerged as a countermeasure to domestic chaos and external imperialism. Second, Donghak came from Suun Choi's religious experience to resolve the inner conflict. Third, Donghak was born of the awareness of individuals and universal humans. Fourth, it played a role as a starting point for the transformation of the times.

이 연구의 목적은 동학의 발생 과정과 주요 특징을 역사적인 측면에서 지니는 가치를 논의한다. 이 연구의 내용은 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 동학의 발생 요인을 외적인 면에서 그리고 내적인 면에서 다뤘다. 둘째, 동학 발생의 주요 특징을 보국안민과 득도 과정을 중심으로 해서 다뤘다. 셋째, 동학의 시대적 의미를 다뤘다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 동학은 국내의 혼란한 상황과 외부의 제국주의에 대한 대응책으로 발생했다. 둘째, 동학은 수운 최제우의 내적 갈등 해소를 위한 종교체험에서 발생했다. 셋째, 동학은 개인과 보편적 인간의 자각에 의해서 발생했다. 넷째, 동학은 시대적 전환을 위한 단초로서의 역할을 담당했다.
