This study intended to examine the expressive characteristics of emotional tattoos, which have noticeably reflected the changes in social perception since the 20th century, among ornamental expression methods as the practice of putting a design directly on the surface of a skin from ancient times. In this study, emotional tattoo was defined as the one created arbitrarily to express oneself reflecting modern people’s diverse sensibilities and psychological characteristics, which are set apart from the one in the traditional sense expressed in a religious, shamanistic, or collective way. In other words, emotional tattoo is a product of unique personal identity, determination to enjoy life, and desire to adorn oneself. Expressive characteristics of each pattern are as follows: First, geometric patterns tended to show not a certain regularity but a single form such as a triangle, circle, and quadrangle. Second, plant patterns covered a relatively small area of the skin and were mainly shown in females with a gentle feel. Third, animal patterns were frequently found in both males and females with familiar images such as butterfly and pet dog. Fourth, most of letter patterns were cursive script, mainly reflecting personal characteristics in which imitation is meaningless, such as positive messages including a lifelong motto or birth date of a family member or a lover. Fifth, mixed patterns, which is a type most frequently seen in emotional tattoos, are marked by harmony between letter and pattern, i.e., harmony between images such as family, lover, celebrity, and pet and letters such as birthdate, name, and lifelong motto. At a time when emotional tattoo as a fashion trend has become more widespread, this study has its meaning as a fundamental research on social meanings of patterns which have been established as a means for the expression of personal identity and aesthetic taste.

본 연구는 고대로부터 인체에 직접적으로 행해지고 있는 장식적 표현 방법 중에서 20세기 이후 사회적 인식의 변화가 두드러진 감성 타투의 표현적 특성을 살펴보았다. 감성 타투는 종교적, 주술적, 집단적으로 표현된 전통적 의미의 타투와 구별하여 현대인들의 다양한 감성과 심리적 특성을 반영하며 자신을 표현하기 위해 자의적으로 행해지는 타투로 정의하였고, 개인의 정체성과 삶에 대한 의지, 자신을 아름답게 꾸미고자 하는 표현적 욕구의 결과물이다. 감성 타투의 문양별 표현적 특성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기하학적 문양은 일 정한 규칙성보다는 삼각형, 원형, 사각형 등의 단일 형태가 주로 나타났다. 손가락, 손목, 손등, 팔 등에 비교 적 작은 크기의 검은색으로 남녀 구분 없이 나타났다. 둘째, 식물 문양은 비교적 작은 면적에 분포하며 부드 러운 이미지가 주로 여성에서 나타났다. 작은 크기의 다양한 식물 문양이 사실적으로 귀 뒤쪽과 가슴 윗부분, 손목과 발목에 위치한 경우가 많다. 셋째, 동물 문양은 나비, 애완견 등 주변에서 친숙하게 볼 수 있는 이미지 가 남녀 모두에게 많이 나타났다. 단색의 선적인 표현이 주를 이루는데, 반려동물을 키우는 등의 사회적 흐름 이 반영된 것으로 보인다. 넷째, 문자 문양에서는 영문 필기체가 가장 많이 나타났고, 삶의 모토 등 긍정적인 메시지, 가족이나 연인의 생년월일 등 모방에는 의미가 없는 개인적 특성을 반영하고 있다. 다섯째, 문양의 혼용은 감성 타투에서 가장 많이 나타나는 유형으로 문자와 문양이 조화를 이루며, 가족, 연인, 연예인, 반려 동물 등의 이미지가 출생연도, 이름, 삶의 모토 등과 조화롭게 혼용되어 나타난다. 전통적 타투가 과시적, 위협적, 형벌적 수단으로 제한적으로 사용된 반면 감성 타투에서는 다양한 문양이 개인의 감성과 정체성을 표현하는 수단으로 확산되고 있다. 본 연구는 하나의 패션 트렌드로써 감성 타투가 널리 확산되고 있는 시점 에서 개인의 정체성과 미적 취향의 표현으로 자리 잡아가고 있는 문양의 사회적 의미에 대한 기초연구로서 의미를 갖는다.
