[Purpose] This article investigates the hot hand effect in the Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association(KLPGA) Tournaments empirically. The hot hand, a relationship between the serial performance of a player, has been examined over different fields of study. [Method] Especially, the golf is best suited for evaluating the existence of such an effect since plays are discrete and performed under controlled environments. We find the evidence of the hot hand by analyzing hole-by-hole plays in 28 LPGA tournaments statistically. [Result] It is more likely for players to have poor performance in the current hole after a poor score in the last hole and plays on consecutive holes are not independent. In robustness tests with subsample sets according to players’ ranking, we also show that there exists a similar effect between performances in last and current holes. Additional tests suggest that the hot hand effect arises not from tee-shots but from second shots and putts. [Conclusion] The results imply that golf players need to establish the strategy in the current hole considering their performance in the last hole.

[목적] 본 연구는 한국여자프로골프대회의 핫핸드 효과(Hot hand effect)를 실증적으로 분석한다. 지난 성과와 다음 성과 사이의 상관관계를 뜻하는 핫핸드는 여러 스포츠를 비롯한 다양한 분야에서 오랜 기간 탐구한 중요한 연구 주 제이다. [방법] 특히 골프는 지난 플레이와 다음 플레이가 확실하게 구분될 뿐 아니라 다른 스포츠와 비교하여 플레 이 환경이 매우 잘 통제되어 있어 핫핸드 효과를 검증하기에 적합한 대상이라 할 수 있다. 우리는 한국여자프로골프 대회의 연간 28개 대회의 모든 선수들의 홀별 성적을 수집하여 통계적 분석을 실시하였으며 핫핸드 효과가 존재한다 는 것을 밝혔다. [결과] 실증 분석에 따르면 지난 홀에서 실수를 범한 경우 다음 홀에서도 실수를 범할 확률이 높은 것으로 나타났고, 연속적인 홀에서의 플레이가 서로 독립적이지 않음을 제시했다. 선수들을 실력에 따라 세 집단으 로 나누어 실시한 분석에서도 지난 홀의 실수가 다음 홀의 성적과 관련이 있음을 파악했다. 이러한 연속적인 플레이 간의 연관성은 티샷이 아닌 세컨샷 또는 퍼트에 기인한 것으로 나타난다. [결론] 핫핸드의 존재는 지난 홀의 성적을 반영하여 다음 홀의 접근 전략을 수립할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
