The history of image can be said to be the history of the record of human figure's creation. Portraits and self-portraits, in particular, that have developed with the visualization of facial images, have been varying their modes and forms by reflecting world view and individual aesthetic conscious in each period. “What we see gains life and significance in our gaze,” as Didi-Huberman insists, self-portrait particularly acquires the life in its producer's gaze which becomes a reflective eye. And the performativity accompanied in the process of making clay works is a healing as sublimation which retrieves its maker's self-identity. The self-examinating gaze constructively requires the separation of the gaze that one ego possesses another ego as the object of recognition, judgment, perception. In this way, the trauma resulted from the conflicts against the other can be treated, and artistic activity works as reunion with and hospitality to the other. The other is not the object of representation but both the subject and object in question. Initiating conversation with the other is the very hospitality and it enables reflective thinking. Transcribing the encounter with the other is self-portrait, portrait, and becomes all sorts of pictures.

이미지의 역사는 인간 형상을 창조하고 기록하고 전달해온 역사라고 할 수 있다. 특히 얼굴 이미지의 형상화를 중심으로 발전해온 초상화와 자화 상은 각 시대마다 요구되는 세계관과 개인의 미의식을 반영함으로써 그 양상을 달리 해왔다. 따라서 현대에는 도자예술이 기존의 조각이나 회화 못지않게 자화상으로의 내면 표현을 충분히 발휘할 수 있다고 보고, 재료 의 특성에 의해 시간성 아래서 경험하게 되는 수행성과 그로 인한 치유의 가능성을 규명하고자 하였다. 자화상은 특히 자신의 시선 안에서 자신이 생명과 의미를 얻게 되므로 성찰적 시선이 되며, 도자 작품을 제작하는 과정에서 수반되는 수행성은 승화로서의 치유 과정이자 타자와의 화해를 모색할 수 있게 해준다. 성찰적 시선은 하나의 자아가 다른 자아를 인식, 판단, 지각의 대상으 로 전유하는 시선의 분리를 구조적으로 요구한다. 그럼으로써 타자와의 관계에서 발생된 트라우마가 치유될 수 있으며, 이 같은 작품 활동이 작 가의 숭고화 과정일 뿐만 아니라 타자와의 화해를 가능케 해주는 하나의 장(場)이 된다. 자화상의 제작을 위해 성찰하는 거울 속 자신의 모습에서 발견된 타자는 스스로를 돌이켜 반성적 사유를 가능케 한다. 바로 이러한 타자성과의 만남을 기록하는 것이 자화상이며, 초상화이며, 그림자이며, 모든 그림이다. 미술에 나타난 무의식의 심리학적 태도를 끊임없이 인간 의 내면을 발견해 내고 탐구하는 진행형으로 존재하고 있다.
