This thesis considers the meaning of Sakhalin which lies in the starting point of Lee Hoesung's literature from the perspective of Zainichi Korean. Sakhalin represented in Lee's earlier works has the image of abandonment, nostalgia and diaspora. At the same time, however, Sakhalin is the place newly roused in the Zainichi Korean's present life. The story of Chul󰠏o's family's wandering in This Load Once More, Lee's debut work, symbolizes the problem of Korean Diaspora. Chul󰠏o's father's homeland is Hwang󰠏hae do, North Korea. He crossed over to Japan in the colonial period and ran through various places, and moved to Sakhalin, the northernmost land of Imperial Japan. After Korea was liberated from Japan, Chul󰠏o's family could barely escape from Sakhalin, but they couldn't return to Korea. Instead, they settled in Japan. Chul󰠏o's step mother wanted to return to North Korea through ‘The Project of Repatriation’ in 1967. The memory of Sakhalin roused in this process is the very testimony which recovers the identity as a Korean and renew the meaning of Zainichi Korean's present life. The perspective of border crossing represented from Lee's earlier works with a background of Sakhalin is the result of Lee's struggling against contemporaneous adversity and continuing to ask the meaning of Zainichi Korean's present life.

본 논문은 이회성 문학의 원점에 있는 ‘사할린’의 의미를 현재 재일의 삶을 살아가는 입장에서 살펴본 것이다. 이회성의 초기작에 나오는 사할린은 기민(棄民)과 망향의 땅이었고, 이산(離散)의 장소로 그려져 있다. 그러나 동시에 현재 재일(在日)의 시점에서 새롭게 환기되는 장소이기도 하다. 문단 데뷔작 ｢또 다시 이 길｣에서 황해도가 고향인 철오의 아버지가 일제강점기에 일본을 거쳐 최북단 사할린까지 갔다가 해방 후에 조국으로 돌아오지 못하고 다시 일본으로, 그리고 새어머니의 북한 귀국으로 이어지는 두 세대에 걸친 유맹(流氓)의 이야기는 코리안 디아스포라의 문제를 상징적으로 보여준다. ｢또 다시 이 길｣ 외에도 이회성의 초기작에는 사할린의 기억이 현재의 시점에서 소환되고 환기되는 구조를 볼 수 있는데, 이와 같은 사할린의 기억은 해방 후에 조선인으로서의 자기동일성을 되찾고 현재의 재일의 삶에 대한 의미를 새롭게 해가기 위한 스스로의 ‘증언’으로 작동하고 있다. 이회성 문학에 보이는 탈경계적 시좌는 사할린을 배경으로 하는 초기작부터 1990년대의 활동에 이르기까지 동시대적 상황과 쟁투하며 재일을 사는 의미를 끊임없이 자문해온 성과라고 평가할 수 있다.
