Choi Yong-shin was first known to the general public widely through Joseon Jungang Ilbo, The Evergreen Tree and A Short Biography of Choi Yong-Shin. The full-blown research on him began in the 1980s and got on the track already in the 1990 with active researches on The Evergreen Tree, as well. Entering the 2000s, specialists in historical studies joined those researchers. In the 2010, the participation of specialists in historical studies grew even more with much more books and papers published than before. Interest was taken in people around Choi as well as Choi himself. Topics were raised as to how to remember him, and there were researches on his storytelling. There is a huge quantity of researches on Choi with the research scope expanding gradually. The participation of specialists in historical studies is on the rise, as well. It is, however, early to have an optimistic outlook for the future. Improvement in quality is as important as increase in the number of researchers and achievements. In other words, new researches should be clearly differentiated from previous ones. It is essential to review previous studies including Ryu Dal-yeong's A Short Biography of Choi Yong-Shin in a critical way. Researchers have been paid little attention to their critical review. In some ways, the research of Choi has reached a "saturated point." There is a question about how many new researches will be possible in the future. The possibilities will be broad if the scope of interest is expanded, but new researches focused on Choi himself will not be easy unless new materials are excavated. The only approach left is to review the old materials and previous studies in a critical manner. The investigator proposed eight future tasks in this regard.

최용신은 ｢조선중앙일보｣·『상록수』·『최용신 소전』등을 통해 일반에 게 널리 알려지기 시작했으나 본격적인 연구는 1980년대에 시작되어 1990년대에 이미 궤도에 올랐고, 『상록수』에 대한 연구도 활끼를 띠었다. 2000년대에는 역사학 전공자들이 연구에 합류했으며, 2010년대에 들 어와 역사학 전공자들의 참여가 더욱 늘어났고 이전보다 훨씬 많은 저서 와 논문이 발표되었다. 그리고 최용신에 대한 연구뿐 아니라 그 주변인 물들에 대한 관심도 나타났으며, 최용신을 어떻게 기억할 것인가란 화두 가 던져지기도 했다. 또 최용신에 대한 스토리텔링도 연구되었다. 이처럼 최용신 관련 연구는 양적으로는 매우 많으며, 분야도 점차 확 장되고 있다. 그리고 역사학 전공자들의 참여도 점차 늘어나는 추세이 다. 그렇다고 해서 앞으로의 전망을 낙관만 하기는 이르다. 연구자나 그 성과가 늘어가는 것 못지않게 중요한 것이 질적 수준의 제고다. 달리 말 해, 선행연구와 차별성이 뚜렷해야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 류달영의 『최용신 소전』을 비롯한 선행연구에 대한 비판적 검토가 필수다. 하지만 그 동안 이에 대해서는 연구자들이 소홀했던 것 같다. 어찌보면 최용신 연구는 ‘포화상태’라 할 수 있다. 얼마나 새로운 연구 들이 나올 수 있을지 의문스럽다. 물론 그 관심 영역을 넓힌다면 가능하 겠지만, 최용신에 초점을 맞춘 연구라면 새로운 자료가 밝굴되지 않는 한 새로운 연구가 쉽지 않을 것 같다. 그렇다면 방법은 기존자료와 선행 연구에 대한 비판적 검토뿐이다. 이에 대해 필자는 8개의 향후과제를 제 시했다.
