This study aims to analyze key concepts in elementary school history textbooks in the UK. For this purpose, I analyzed the 3rd to 6th grade, KS2 of national curriculum, history textbooks published by CGPbook, a representative textbook publisher in UK. Historical key concepts such as ‘similarity and difference’, ‘change and continuity’, ‘causality’, ‘evidence’, ‘account’ and ‘interpretation’ were addressed as main learning objectives in these textbooks. Such key concepts helped students construct historical knowledge through understanding the nature of historical facts and inquiring them. And, key concepts were presented through meaningful historical facts and substantive concepts. Based on such analyzing results, the key concept of history textbook should be understood through historical inquiry. And, it is necessary to address the key concept through historical facts involving two or more correlated historical key concepts.

본 연구에서는 영국의 초등학교 역사 교과서 내용에 반영된 핵심개념을 분석하였다. 분석 대상은 영국 의 대표적 교과서 출판사인 CGPbook에서 발행한 영국 국가 교육과정의 주요단계2에 해당하는 3~6학년의 역 사교과서이다. 영국 초등 역사교과서는 유사점과 차이점, 변화와 연속성, 인과관계, 증거, 설명이나 해석과 같 은 핵심개념을 주요 학습 목표로 다루고 있다. 이런 핵심개념은 학생들이 역사적 사실의 성격을 이해하고 역 사탐구를 통해 자기 스스로 역사를 구성하는데 도움을 주고 있다. 그리고 역사의 핵심개념을 학생들에게 의 미 있는 역사적 사실을 통해 제시하고 있다. 이런 분석 결과에 비추어, 역사의 핵심개념을 역사탐구의 경험을 통해 이해할 수 있도록 교과서를 구성할 필요가 있다. 또한 두 가지 이상의 개념을 상호 연관 지을 수 있는 역 사적 사실을 통해 핵심개념을 제시하는 것이 바람직하다.
