This article explores the characteristics and the people associated with the magazine “The Contemporary Review (Hyŏndaep’yŏngnon)”. The contents policy of “The Contemporary Review (Hyŏndaep’yŏngnon)” can be summarized as follows: First, it produced knowledge of Korea per se. This was because the problem with the reality of colonial Korea has to be understood from the viewpoint of “particularity” in colonial Korea rather than the “universality,” which constitutes the global colonial order. Second, it supported Sin’ganhoe, the National United Front, and suggested a political platform for the public of colonial Korea. The people who joined the management of the magazine were men of wealth with experience in studying abroad, journalism, and academia. “The Contemporary Review (Hyŏndaep’yŏngnon)” carried sophisticated Korean studies’ research produced through Chosŏnsajŏngjosayŏn’guhoe’s network and by commissioned writers. Key figures of the Communist Party of Korea published articles about the history of the social movement in Korea as well. The people who operated the branch office of “The Contemporary Review (Hyŏndaep’yŏngnon)” are worth investigating. They were from various backgrounds including Christianity, the rural rehabilitation movement, the educational movement, socialism, the young adult group, and journalism.

이 논문은 1927년 1월 발간되어 불과 1년여 남짓 발행된 월간잡지 『현대평론』 의 위상과 그 운영 주체들을 검토하고자 한다. 『현대평론』 은 개벽 폐간 이후 새롭게 신문지법에 의해 창간되어 시사 문제를 다룰 수 있는 월간잡지였다. 『현대평론』 은 식민지 조선의 정치·경제·사회적 재건을 목적을 창간되었다. 구체적 방법은 다음의 두 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 조선을 현실 문제 해결의 기준으로 제시였고, 이는 ‘조선’의 특수화를 통해 식민지적 인식으로부터 벗어나고자 하는 시도였다. 둘째, 민족유일당 신간회를 지지하며, 조선민중을 위한 ‘강령’ 생산 기관이 되고자 하였다. 『현대평론』 의 경영진은 하준석을 비롯한 유학생 출신의 재력가와 언론계 및 학계에서 활동하던 이관용 등이었다. 이들은 촉탁을 위촉하고, 조선사정조사연구회의 네트워크를 이용하여 당시 학계의 수준 높은 연구들을 『현대평론』 에 게재하였다. 또한 『현대평론』 에는 조선공산당의 핵심인물들이 조선의 사회운동에 대한 역사적 평가 등을 담을 글을 적극적으로 발표하였다. 『현대평론』 지사를 운영하는 주체들도 다양한 성향을 가지고 있었다. 우선, 기독교 사상에 근거하여 농촌자립이나 교육 사업에 관심이 있는 인물들이 있었으며, 또한 사회주의 운동과 관련을 맺고 지역에서 활동하는 인물들도 있었다. 이밖에도 청년회나 기타 단체 활동을 병행하지만 지역 언론인의 정체성을 더 강하게 가진 인물들도 있었다.
