In this article, I briefly examined the current situation of Jeolla Province of the first half of the Joseon Dynasty in various aspects, including politics, economy, society, and culture. The results can be summarized as follows. First, there are not many studies on Jeolla of the first half of the Joseon Dynasty, compared to other periods. Rather, there are more studies covering all periods of the Joseon Dynasty. Because of this, there is a limit that the characteristics of Jeolla Province in the first half of Joseon cannot be properly understood. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the research on Jeolla Province at this time while balancing with other times. Second, even in the same Jeolla Province, the variation was very large depending on where the study area was. In particular, studies on Hyanggyo, Seowon, local system, Sugunjin, and literature were mainly conducted on Jeollanam-do, while very few studies were conducted on Jeollabuk-do. Therefore, it is possible to completely restore the history of Jeolla Province only by reducing the deviation between these study areas. Third, looking into the contents of the previous research papers, rather than analyzing Jeolla as the main research object, there were many cases describing the history of Jeolla as a part of national history. For this reason, the status and role of Jeolla Province in the development of Korean history tends to be difficult to grasp. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on Jeolla Province in the first half of the Joseon Dynasty from the perspective of local history, not national history, and from the local rather than central one. In addition, researchers need to think more deeply about how to balance the universality of Korean history with the specificity of Jeolla.

이 글은 조선전기 전라도 지방에 대한 연구현황을 정치와 경제, 사회와 문화로 정리한 것이다. 이를 토대로 조선전기 전라도 역사에 대한 연구의 특징과 앞으로의 연구 방향을 제시해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조선전기 전라도에 대한 연구는 다른 시기에 비해서 그리 많지 않았으며, 조선시대 전시기를 대상으로 한 경우가 많았다. 이 때문에 조선전기 전라도의 특성을 제대로 파악할 수 없는 한계가 있다. 따라서 다른 시대와 균형을 맞추면서 조선전기 전라도에 대한 연구를 확대할 필요성이 있다. 둘째, 같은 전라도 지역이지만 연구대상 지역에 대한 지역적 편차가 매우 컸다. 특히 향교와 서원, 지방제도와 수군진, 문학 등의 연구는 주로 전남지역을 대상으로 이루어졌으며, 전북지방을 대상으로 한 연구는 매우 적었다. 따라서 이러한 연구대상 지역의 편차를 줄여야만 온전한 전라도의 역사를 복원할 수 있을 것이다. 셋째, 연구의 내용이 전라도가 중심이라기보다는 국가사 속에서 일부분을 할애하여 서술한 경우가 매우 많았다. 이 때문에 한국사의 전개과정 속에서 전라도지역이 차지하는 위상과 역할을 제대로 파악할 수 없다. 따라서 국가사 아닌 지방사의 관점에서, 중앙이 아닌 지방의 관점에서 조선전기 전라도에 대한 연구를 진행할 필요성이 있다. 이와 더불어서 한국사의 보편성과 전라도의 특수성을 어떻게 조화시켜야 할지에 대해서도 고민해야 한다.
