This study was conceived by an attempt at assessing Jonathan Edwards's theology and missionary ministry from the perspective of pastoral counseling. This attempt was made to find the principles and resources of caring for the soul in the history of Christian missionary work instead of pastoral counseling based on modern psychology. The research content was developed as follows: first, it checked Edwards's missionary theology as the root of missionary work that targeted Native Americans; second, it examined the characteristics of his missionary work for Native Americans; and third, his missionary work for Native Americans was examined to find the principle of pastoral counseling applicable to the current field of pastoral counseling and assessed it from the perspective of pastoral counseling. The common goal between pastoral counseling and missionary work is a change to one's inside and life driven by the salvation of the soul (conversion). True changes to one's inside lead to changes in his or her life. Edwards made it clear that the subject of such changes should be God since he inherited the Calvinistic anthropology and thus did not find an answer to a problem in human beings as sinners. He believed that a true change would come when people discovered the purpose of creation and experienced God as the origin of joy and happiness in their relationship with God, their Creator, as his creations. In his time, missionary work for Native Americans happened in an inferior environment as missionary work deteriorated as a means of development and had political and economic rights intervened in it. Edwards, however, sought after changes to one's heart in his paradigm and style of missionary work by sympathizing, listening to, and mediating joys, sorrows, and problems of life rather than allowing superior individuals or nations to partially improve uncivilized people and develop the environment. This was a pastoral counseling-based style of missionary work to practice God's love in order to help people experience him. Edwards's style and attitude of missionary work based on the care of the soul will provide significant insights into the care of the soul including therapeutic alliance, embracing with love, and staying with others in today's field of pastoral counseling.

본고는 에드워즈(Edwards)의 신학과 인디언 선교사역을 목회상담적 관점에서 평 가해 보려는 시도에서 출발하였다. 이는 현대 심리학을 기반으로 하는 목회상담이 아 니라 기독교 선교 역사 속에서 영혼 돌봄의 원리와 자원을 찾고자 하는 시도이다. 이를 위한 연구 내용으로 첫째, 인디언 선교의 뿌리인 에드워즈(Edwards)의 선교 신학을 확인한다. 둘째, 에드워즈(Edwards)의 인디언 선교의 특징을 연구한다. 셋째, 인디언 선교를 통해 오늘날 목회상담의 현장에 적용할 수 있는 목회상담의 원리를 도 출하고 그의 인디언 선교를 목회상담적 관점에서 평가한다. 연구방법으로는 에드워즈 (Edwards)의 신학과 선교에 관한 여러 가지 문헌을 통해 연구하였다. 목회상담과 선교의 공통된 목적은 영혼의 구원(회심)으로 말미암는 내적인 변화와 삶의 변화이다. 진정한 내적인 변화는 삶의 변화로 연결된다. 에드워즈(Edwards)는 변화의 주체가 하나님이심을 분명히 했다. 왜냐하면, 그는 칼빈주의 인간론을 계승하 고 있어서 죄인 된 인간으로부터 문제의 해답을 찾지 않았기 때문이다. 인간을 창조 하신 하나님과 피조물의 관계 속에서 창조의 목적을 발견하고 기쁨과 행복의 근원인 하나님을 경험할 때 진정한 변화는 이루어진다고 보았다. 당시 인디언 선교는 매우 열악한 환경 가운데서 진행되었다. 왜냐하면, 선교가 식 민지 개발의 수단으로 전락 되었으며 정치적 경제적 이권이 개입되었기 때문이다. 그 러나 에드워즈(Edwards)의 선교 패러다임과 방식은 우월한 개인이나 민족이 미개한 사람들을 부분적으로 개선 시키고 환경을 개발하는 방식이 아니라 삶의 애환과 문제 를 공감하고 경청하며 중재하는 방식으로 마음의 변화를 추구하였다. 이는 하나님을 경험토록 하기 위한 하나님의 사랑을 실천하는 목회상담적 선교방식이었다. 그의 영 혼 돌봄의 선교방식과 태도는 오늘날 목회상담의 현장에 치료적 동맹 관계, 사랑으로 안아주기, 함께 머물러주기 등 영혼 돌봄에 관한 유의미한 통찰을 제공할 것이다.
