In general, adolescents’ stress increases as they advance in grade and this stress can also have a significant influence on society as well as on the students. Under these circumstances, this study attempted to investigate the effects of head and neck massage using aromatic oil on their attention and stress. For this, 20 students having no ENT disease were chosen among high-school students aged 18 and 19 from alternative boarding schools, and the experiment was performed 10 times in total (twice a week, 5 weeks) from June 1 to July 5. Specifically, aromatic oil was obtained by blending lavender, chamomile and eucalyptus in jojoba oil in a 2:2:1 ratio. Then, a 10-minute massage was given on the head and neck using this oil. The students were relaxed for about 5 minutes before and after the experiment, and then their pulse wave was measured. The state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) survey on physical stress, academic stress and psychological stress was performed three times in total (before the massage, after the 5th massage, after the 10th massage). In addition, the Frankfurt attention inventory (FAIR) was utilized twice (before the massage, after the 10th massage). Pulse waves and stress indexes were measured three times (before the massage, after the 5th massage, after the 10th massage) using uBIO MACPA. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and the results found the following: No significant effects were found in pulse wave index, sympathetic nerve index and parasympathetic nerve index changes. However, these indexes did not exceed standard thresholds. The cumulative stress index decreased from 37.50 (before the massage) to 29.20 (after the 10th massage). According to the FAIR, as well, the results increased after the 10th massage from the status before the massage. This study has confirmed that head and neck massage using aromatic oil has a positive effect on the reduction of stress and improvement of attention in high-school students from alternative schools. It is anticipated that the study results would be available as basic data for future studies on the reduction of stress through massage.
