This essay deals with the problem of evil in Pierre Bayle’s philosophy, which motivated Leibniz’s Theodicy, which is represented as a book on evil in Western modern philosophy. Bayle claims the impossibility of theodicy or defense and sees the existence of evil as a real human condition. Bayle shows that we cannot accept the problem of evil by reason and accept it as faith. From this point of view, criticism of metaphysical, moral, and physical evils is made according to the distinction of evil that is generally dealt with in Bayle. Bayle confines the problem of being to human beings with respect to metaphysical evils, and emphasizes the omnipresent evil of the human world throughout human history. In regard to the moral evil, sin, which deals with the problem of the acceptance of sin, Bayle sees the acceptance of sin as divine will. But it does not turn the problem of human sin into God’s responsibility. For Bayle, the problem of sin is a matter of the individual, summed up as a matter of conscience. With regard to physical evil and suffering, Bayle thoroughly criticizes theories that try to deal with individual suffering and view it as a greater good. Bayle has questioned human conditions through insightful perceptions of reality in times of optimistic worldview.

이 글은 서양근대철학사에서 악에 대한 저서로 대표되는 라이프니츠의 󰡔변신론󰡕의 집필 동기를 부여한 피에르 벨 철학에서 악의문제를 다룬다. 벨은 신정론 혹은 변신론의 불가능성을 주장하며악의 존재를 실재성을 지니는 인간 조건으로 파악한다. 벨은 악의문제에 대한 이성에 의한 증명 불가능을 내세우며 신앙으로 받아들여야 한다는 점을 보인다. 이성과 신앙의 분리를 주장하는 것이다. 이런 관점에서 벨에게서 일반적으로 다루어지는 악의 구분에 따라형이상학적 악과 도덕적 악 그리고 물리적 악에 대한 비판이 이루어진다. 벨은 형이상학적 악에 대해서 존재의 문제를 인간 존재로한정하며 인간 세계의 악의 편재를 인간의 역사를 통해 강조한다. 죄의 허용 문제를 다루는 도덕적 악, 죄에 대해서 벨은 죄의 허용을신의 의지로 파악한다. 하지만 인간들의 죄의 문제를 신의 책임으로 돌리는 것은 아니다. 벨에게 죄의 문제는 개인의 문제로 양심의문제로 요약된다. 물리적 악, 고통에 대해서 벨은 철저하게 개인의고통을 문제 삼으며 고통을 더 큰 선을 위한 것으로 보려는 이론들을 비판한다. 벨은 낙관주의적인 세계관이 팽배해 있던 시대에 통찰력 있는 현실 인식을 통해 인간의 조건을 문제시하고 있다.
