While it is common knowledge that probation/parole officers are exhausted from excessive working hours supervising paroleesㆍprobationers and job characteristics, but there is only few research to explore it. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors influencing burnout in the practice of probationㆍparole officers and to propose policies to solve burnout problems of probation/parole officers. We analyzed 185 survey responses from the probationㆍparole officers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and other metropolitan areas. The results show that fear of physical injury from probationers/parolees and non-regular work(work without any compensation)influence burnout of probation officers. Based on these findings, the following policy suggestions were made. First, it is necessary to increase the probation workforce. There are various ways to reduce non-regular work(work without any compensa-tion)such as securing volunteers workforce and through recruitment. Second, it is necessary to protect probation/parole officers from threats from probationers/parolees and to support victimized probation/ parole officers. For this purpose, it is necessary to make probationers/ parolees recognize the severity and certainty of punishment when they harm the officers in order to reduce the officers' fear and to provide medical support to the probation officers who have already suffered psychological and physical damage.

보호공무원의 경우 실무에서 보호관찰대상자에 대한 원호와 지도감독을 수행하고 있어 과도한 업무시간과 직무특성에서 오는 탈진이 사회적 이슈가 되고 있으나 이를 해결하 기 위한 조사나 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 이에 이 연구는 보호관찰공무원이 실무에서 탈진에 영향을 미치는 요인을 검증하고 탈진문제 해결을 위한 정책적 제언을 목적으로 수행되었다. 연구에 목적을 달성하기 위하여 서울․경기 등 수도권 지역의 현장업무 담 당 보호관찰공무원 185명의 설문응답 내용을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 비정규 근무(무임 금), 업무수행에 있어 보호관찰 대상자로 부터의 육체적 피해두려움이 보호관찰공무원 의 탈진을 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 바탕으로 다음과 같은 정책적 제언을 하였다. 첫째, 보호관찰 인력 의 충원이 필요하다. 인력충원을 통해서 무임금 업무를 줄이고 봉사인력을 확보하는 등 다양한 방안이 요구된다. 둘째, 보호관찰대상의 보호관찰공무원에 대한 위협행위를 근절과 피해보호관찰과에 대한 처우가 필요하다. 이를 위해 보호관찰대상자가 보호관 찰공무원에게 물리적ㆍ심리적 위해를 가할 경우 처벌의 엄격성과 확실성을 인지시켜 보호관찰공무원의 두려움을 줄이는 한편, 대상자로부터 이미 정신적ㆍ육체적 피해를 받은 보호관찰공무원에 대한 의료지원과 같은 구체적 지원정책의 필요할 것이다.
