In the face of the radical changes surrounding the contemporary churches, the churches are forced to deeply consider how to worship properly. In this context, John Wesley’s Sunday Service of the Methodists in North America provides important guidance and assistance for troubled contemporary situation. As an anglican priest belonged to a strong liturgical tradition, Wesley lived as an active field preacher delivering powerful evangelical sermons as well. The Sunday Service has played an significant role in revisions of later Wesleyan worships. This article deals with the principles of revision implied in his Sunday Service, and seeks the answers of how contemporary churches in rapidly changing society can effectively cope with such challenges by properly adapting themselves to those environment while keeping the pure identity of their worships. Thus, in the first part, this article examines the backgrounds of previous periods imbedded in John Wesley’s revision of the liturgy, and in the second part, based on his revisions and related activities, it deals with issues about how the worships can be adapted to contemporary society appropriately, how they can constantly remain in strong evangelical dynamics, how they can be in balance with other aspects like sacramentality, and how they increase participation of the congregation in worship.

오늘날 교회를 둘러싼 환경의 급격한 변화 앞에서 교회는 어떻게 예 배해야 할 것인가에 대해 적지 않은 고민을 하게 되었다. 이런 상황 속 에서 18세기에 John Wesley가 미국의 감리교인들에게 보낸, 『주일예 배서』Sunday Service of the Methodists in North America는 고민에 처한 현대 교회들을 위해 중요한 지침과 도움을 제공하고 있다. 그는 강한 예전적 전통의 성공회 사제였지만 또한 많은 설교를 행한 열정적 전도자이기도 했다. 그가 미국 감리교도들에게 전해 준『주일예배서』 는 이후 여러 나라의 감리교회들의 예배 개정에 매우 중요한 기초와 거 울이 되었다. 이 논문은 그의 개정된 예배서, 『주일예배서』안에 함축 된 개정의 원리들을 찾아내어 급격히 변화하는 현대 사회 속에서 어떻 게 교회들이 변화와 도전에 대처하면서 동시에 본질을 잘 지킬 수 있는 지 찾고 그 대안들을 제시하고 있다. 본 논문의 내용은 먼저 첫 번째 파 트에서는 John Wesley의 예배 개정에 끼친 그 이전 시대의 영국교회 의 배경들을 살펴본 후, 이어서 두 번째 파트에서는 그의 예배 개정안 에 담긴 함의들, 즉 어떻게 하면 오늘날의 교회가 현대 사회에 잘 적응 하는 예배를 할 것인가? 어떻게 하면 예배가 강력한 복음적 확신을 제 공할 것인가? 셋째, 어떻게 하면 성례전의 긍정적인 전통을 살펴 균형있게 예배할 것인가? 넷째는, 어떻게 하면 예배 안에 회중의 참여도를 높일 것인가? 등에 관한 통찰을 제시하고 있다.
