Even though the criteria for the Period Division of Korean language history have received the most academic attention, the validity of the criterion is still controversial. Until now, the use of historical terms in a way that is different from their original meaning has resulted in unnecessary confusion. Although the researcher’s perspective is most important in Period Division of Korean language history, the validity or consistency of the perspective has not been fully verified. And as a result of the Period Division being so macroscopic, the development of Korean language history cannot be easily understanded. These problems must be solved in order to further develop the Period Division. First of all, the terminology of the Period Division of Korean language history should be used no differently from its meaning in general history. And the historical period of Korean language should be distinguished from the prehistoric period of Korean by considering that it begins from the beginning of the 5th century after the records. The names of all periods, as well as the prehistoric periods of Korean language, need to be given specifically to understand the Korean historical facts of that period. For this more advanced Period Division of Korean language history, there must be a clear and consistent perspective of the researcher.

그동안의 한국어사 시대 구분에서 가장 많은 관심의 대상이 된 것은 그 기준 문제 였음에도 그 기준의 타당성은 논란의 여지가 있다. 또한 지금까지의 시대 구분에서는 시대 명칭의 용어를 역사학의 원래 의미와는 다르게 시대적 선후만을 가리키는 것으 로 사용함으로써 불필요한 혼동을 야기했다. 시대 구분에서 가장 중요한 사실이 연구 자의 관점임에도 그 관점의 타당성이나 일관성이 적극적으로 입증되지 않은 것이 사 실이다. 또한 시대 구분이 지나치게 거시적으로 이루어져 한국어사의 전개 양상을 쉽 게 파악하기 어려웠다. 보다 발전적인 시대 구분을 위해서는 이러한 문제점을 해결할 필요가 있다. 우선 시대 구분의 명칭은 역사학의 용법이나 일반적 의미와 어긋나지 않게 사용해야 한다. 또한 일반적인 역사학에서와 마찬가지로 한국어사는 기록으로 확인되는 5세기 초 이후부터를 대상으로 하여, 한국어의 선사 시대와 구별해야 한다. 이때 한국어의 선사 시기는 물론 구분된 모든 시대의 명칭은 그 시기의 한국어사적 사실을 이해할 수 있도록 구체적으로 부여할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해서는 명확하고 일관성 있는 연구자의 관점이 필요하다.
