This paper is a continuation of my earlier work on Josephus' understanding of the Sadducees, and tries to research on the historical Sadducees before the destruction of the temple. We do not have any literature found written by the Sadducees themselves. Thus, this study concentrates on the Rabbinic literature, Dead Sea Scrolls, and New Testament which mention about them though very little. These literatures contain mostly mockery and hostile descriptions about them. Therefore, it is hard to know for us what the Sadducees really are in history. However, this research attempts to clarify what we can know about the Sadducees and what we do not know as exact facts. To this end, we have critically researched the contents of the Sadducees in other texts from their contemporaries. This paper tries to grasp the motivations and intentions hidden in the historical records of Sadducees, and reconstructs not only the external observations but also the internal voices of Sadducees. It seems that Sadducees are most conservative Jewish denomination of the time. They conservatively defended the Mosaic Law from popular popularity, religious syncretism, more than any other ancient Jewish denominations known to us. The stereotype thinking that Sadducees only accepted the Pentateuch and refused any oral traditions and written texts as the authority, refusal of the existence of angels seems to be only prejudice

이 논문은 앞서 우리가 연구한 요세푸스의 사두개파 이해의 연속 선상 에 있으며, 주로 이전 논문에서 전부 다루지 못한 자료들이자 사두개파에 대 한 적대적인 내용을 담은 랍비문헌, 쿰란 문헌, 신약이 말하는 사두개파를 통해 성전멸망 이전의 사두개파를 연구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 늘 역사 속 에서 적대자의 시선은 통속적이고 편견이 가득하기 쉽고 비난의 대상에 관 해 정확한 정보를 파악하기 어렵다. 우리는 비판적인 고찰을 통해 사두개파 에 관하여 현재 우리가 무엇을 안다고 착각하고 있고 무엇이 알기 어려운지 좀 더 선명히 그려내려고 노력했다. 그런데도 당시 사두개인들이 ‘정확히’ 어 떤 사람들인지 아는 것은 어렵다. 따라서 이 논문은 가능성 차원에서 당시 사두개파에 관한 역사 기록들에 숨겨진 심층적 동기와 의도를 파악하며 사 두개파의 외부적 관찰뿐만 아니라 내적인 목소리도 재구성하였다. 그들은 다른 종파들과 대립한 가운데, 어느 종파보다 모세율법을 대중적 인기, 종 교적 혼합주의와 오염으로부터 지켜내기 위해, 타협을 거부하고 보수적으로 지키려고 노력한 집단으로 보인다. 이때 우리가 통속적으로 알고 있는 사두 개파가 모세오경만 권위로 인정하고, 구전전통이 없었고, 천사의 존재를 부 인하였다는 틀에 박힌 묘사는 고정관념일 것이다.
