Genocide related to Christians during the Korean War is twofold: Christians were killed by the North Korean people’s army, police, and local leftists on the one hand and Christians participated in mass killings on the other. The first has affected to generate and reproduce the faith of ‘anti-communism’ in church groups whereas the latter has remained unknown to Christians as well as experts of massacres until today. At first, North Korea’s police had classified Christianity as a wicked religion ever since February 1942 when the interim National People’s Congress was established, and took a position against the Christian alliance of South Korean politicians and the United State of America. From April in the same year, National Security Bureau of North Korea labelled the act of the U.S. in the Korean peninsula as Imperialism and started inspecting reactionaries among Christians, judging them as the pro-United States. The inspection was based on the hostile policy towards Christianity, and thereby Christians were slaughtered by North Korean soldiers and local leftists while the people’s army retreated. By contrast, numerous Christians joined in civilian massacres during the Korean War. Several among them were in high positions, organizing and commanding mass killings. They represented the mainstream Christian belief at that time and used it for the justification of such violence. Importantly, the belief was founded on a dualism that excludes religious and ideological others. For example, Jae-Do Oh categorized members of Bo-do League rooted in a Christian creed, ‘repentance’ while Byung-Ok Jo divided the world the good and the evil, and understood that eliminating the evil bloc advances the Kingdom of God. Do-Young Jang regarded guarding the capitalistic bloc along with the U.S. as his vocation, advocating ‘God’s Forces’ in 1947. By this ideology, Chang-Ryung Kim was able to justify the civilian massacres at his hand. Likewise, the exclusive dualism has been affecting the Korean Peninsula ever since August 15th, 1945 just as the cold war was founded along with this exclusion and dualism. This ideology permeated religions. South Korean Christians and North Korea’s security forces were loyal to it. Civilian massacres at the hand of Christians took place by such an ideological collision. This is the point of reflection that why Christians who speak love and peace participated in mass killings. Throughout this paper, I illustrate these historical records and argue that reconciliation can be achieved only when both South Korea’s Christians and North Korean security forces acknowledge what had happened in the past and express their regrets.
