I surveyed how Korean modern novels depicted the railway and understood its nature. I aimed to comprehend concretely the process of forming Korean modern society and the transformation of human life and consciousness in it through the shapes of railway appeared in Modern novels. The first record of railway experience was shown in Ildonggiyu, a Japanese Travel Essay. In the book, the railway revealed its surprising unknowable character. This pose was extended to Kyeongbucheoldoga, the Song of Seoul-Busan Railroad. Next the strong desire to be a modern man, the master of the railway was full in Hyeoleuinu, Tears of Blood and Mujeong, No Affection by presenting various characters. In Mansejeon, Before the 3.1 Uprising in the 1920s, the mind and ideas of modern man were featured with his limitation. For the lower class people, the railway looked like the violent giant, because it spoke for capitalists. Gwadogi, Transition Period recorded well this aspects. In the 1930s, time of one generation went passes from the train’s emergence in the Korean peninsula. It soaked into the everyday life. It was represented as the dailiness, rational thinking, bowing to custom, and tourist industry in Cheollo, Railroad, Don, Pig, Sarangsonnim-gwa-Eomeoni, A guest in the opposite room and Mom, Tangnyu, Muddy Stream.

이 글은 한국 근대 문학 작품, 특히 소설 속에 철도가 어떻게 나타나고 우리 문학이 그것을 어떻게 이해하고 있는가를 살피려고 한다. 우리 사회가 근대를 어떻게 형성해 왔는가, 그리고 인간의 삶과 의식이 근대 사회 속에서 어떻게 변형되었는가를 철도를 통해 구체적으로 이해 하고자 하는 것이다. 철도 체험에 관한 우리나라 최초의 기록인 <일동기유>에서의 기록에서 보이듯이 철도는 처음 놀라움의 대상으로 받아들여졌고 이는 <경부철도가>에도 이어진다. 이같은 철도를 운용하는 주체인 근대인이 되고 싶은 열망이 이어 <혈의 누>와 <무정>에서 등장 인물의 행로를 통하여 나타난다. <만세전>은 근대인의 관념을 여러 한계와 함께 잘 드 러낸다. 철도는 자본주의와 병진하는 만큼 민중들에게는 거대한 폭력과도 같은 존재로 나타나 게 되는게 <과도기>는 이를 잘 증언하고 있다. 처음 놓인 지 한 세대여의 시간이 흐른 뒤 철도는 사람들의 삶 속에 스며들어 일상적인 사물이 된다. 일상 속의 철도의 다양한 양상을 <철로>, <돈>, <사랑 손님과 어머니>, <탁류> 등 몇 편의 소설에서 살펴 보았다.
