This paper is a comparative study of disaster literature surrounding the Sewol Ferry Sinking Accident in Korea and the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake in Japan. In particular, this paper focuses on the poems addressing these huge disasters through the memories of disasters in the past. The disaster literature of Korea and Japan, which depicts the Sewol Ferry Sinking Accident and the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, were different from the memories of the past summoned to explain this devastating disasters. First, the memories of the past that could explain and liken the disaster poems of the 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake in Japan were mainly the war situation during the Pacific War, the terrible sight of air strikes, and the natural disasters experienced before. Of particular interest in these disaster collections was the recall of memories of the exposure of atomic bombs. However, the memories of the past recalled from the disaster literature on the theme of the Sewol Ferry Sinking Accident in Korea was various political events inscribed in Korean modern history. For example, the 4.3 protests on Jeju Island, the election fraud, and the process of the 4.19 Revolution that violently suppressed the protesting citizens, the Gwangju democratization movement and the democratization movement in the 1980s, and the ideological confrontation and attack caused by the Cold War. Korean poets recognized the Sewol Ferry Sinking Accident through the memory of this most unfortunate and disastrous political disasters in Korean modern history.

이 연구는 한국의 세월호침몰사고와 3.11 동일본대지진을 둘러싼 재난문학을 비교분석한 것이다. 특히, 본 논문에서는 주로 재난시를 중심으로 하여 이들 거대재난을 인식하고 해석하기 위해 과거의 어떠한 경험과 재난을 통해 이들 사건을 바라보고 있는지에 초점을 두고 분석하였다. 3.11 동일본대지진과 세월호 침몰참사를 그리는 재난문학에서 이 처참한 재난을 인식하고 이를 설명하기 위해 유추하고 소환하는 과거의 기억은 다른 길을 걸어온 두 나라의 현대사만큼이나 상이한 것이었다. 먼저, 일본의 재난시집에서 3.11 동일본대지진을 설명하고 이를 비유할 수 있는 과거의 기억은 주로 태평양전쟁 시기 전쟁상황과 공습의 처참한 광경이나 이전에 경험한 자연재해 등이었지만, 특히 주목을 끌고 있는 것은 원자폭탄의 피폭이라는 기억의 소환이었다. 그러나 한국의 세월호사건을 테마로 한 재난문학에서 소환되는 과거의 기억은 한국현대사에 새겨져 있는 다양한 정치적 사건, 예를 들면 제주도의 4.3항쟁, 부정선거와 이에 항의하는 시민들을 폭력적으로 진압하는 4.19혁명의 과정, 광주민주화운동과 1980년대 민주화운동, 냉전에 의한 이데올로기 대립과 공격이라는 기억이었다. 한국현대사에서 가장 불행하고 처참하였던 이러한 정치적 재난의 기억을 통해 세월호 참사를 인식하고자 하였던 것이다.
