This paper reviews various Korean translations of Kenji Miyazawa’s The Restaurant of Many Orders (注文の多い料理店 Chūmon no Ōi Ryōriten) to discuss different translation strategies by examining lexicon and the contexts. In terms of lexicon, the most direct Korean translations for “山鳥,” “山猫,” “山猫軒,” and “下女” would be “kwŏng” (꿩) [a pheasant], “goyang’i” (고양이) [a cat], “goyang’i hwe’gwan” (고양이회관) [a meeting hall of the cats], and “yŏ’jong’ŏp’wŏn” (여종업원) [a waitress] or “il’ha’neun sa’ram” (일하는 사람) [a working person], respectively. To comment about the contexts of Case (1) and Case (2), all seven translators mentioned in the paper used Korean words that are likely to have multiple interpretations, though featuring different nuances and stresses. Given that the terms quoted in the paper are used in a restaurant, translations by Yoo Eun-kyung (2009) in Case (1) and Shin Ji-shik (2013) in Case (2) appear to be the most appropriate. In the context of the book, a recommendable translation of “sūzūtaberaremasū” (すぐたべられます) [You can eat right away] in Case (3) would be “got mŏk’sūm’ni’da” (곧 먹습니다) [The food can be served soon], a passive sentence featuring various possibilities.

『注文の多い料理店』의 한국어 번역본 『주문이 많은 요리점』을 대상으로 어휘와 문구를 중심으로 한 번역사례를 통해 번역자가 취한 번역전략을 살펴보았다. 우선 어휘 부분에서 ‘山鳥’는 ‘꿩’으로, ‘山猫’는 ‘고양이’로, ‘山猫軒’는 ‘고양이 회관’으로, ‘下女’는 ‘여종업원’ 또는 ‘일하는 사람’으로 번역을 하는 것이 가장 자연스럽다고 생각한다. 문구 부분에서 사례(1)과 사례(2)의 7명의 번역자 모두가 뉘앙스의 강약의 차이는 있지만 모두 복수 해석이 가능한 한국어로 번역하고 있다. 식당에서 사용하는 문구라는 점을 생각한다면 사례(1)에서는 유은경 역(2009), 사례(2)에서는 신지식 역(2013)이 가장 적절한 번역이라고 생각한다. 사례(3)에서 작품의 흐름상 「すぐたべられます」는 가능과 수동의 의미가 들어간 ‘곧 먹습니다’로 번역하는 것이 적절한 번역이라고 생각한다.
