The purpose of this study was to investigate the fast-mapping skill of children in multicultural families, which has been increasing recently, by comparing them with those of monocultural families. For this purpose, the images included in the picture book were used. Participants were 10 children in multicultural families preschool age 3 to 5 years old, 10 children in monocultural families who matched their chronological age, and 10 children in monocultural families who matched their language age. They listened to the story with pictures containing unfamiliar stimulus words(7 nouns and 7 verbs each), and then performed the fast mapping tasks to select the picture corresponding to the target word from the four pictures presented by the researcher. In order to see if there is a difference in the performance of the task among three groups, a correct answer score was calculated according to the word type, and then Kruskal-Wallis H test, which is a nonparametric test, was performed to determine whether the difference was statistically significant. According to the results of the study, first, the scores in the fast mapping task didn't show a significant difference between the children in multicultural families and the children in monocultural families. Second, there was no significant difference among the three groups in the scores according to the word type in the fast mapping task. The results of this study show that the fast mapping skill of children in multicultural families is not inferior to their peers in monocultural families. These results provide insights into the early intervention programs for children in multilingual families who are more likely to delay language development. In other words, it is necessary to actively use image stimulation strategies such as pictures to facilitate vocabulary acquisition and to prevent expressive language delays of children of multicultural families early.

본 연구는 최근 크게 증가하고 있는 다문화가정 아동을 대상으로 그림책에 포함된 이미지를 통해 단어에 대한 빠른 의미 이해가 가능한지를 단일문화가정 아동과의 비교를 통해 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 참여자는 3-5세에 속하는 학령전기 다문화가정 아동 10명, 생활연령을 일치시킨 단일문화가정 아동 10명, 언어연령을 일치시킨 단일문화가정 아동 10명으로 총 30명이었다. 이들은 생소한 자극낱말(명사와 동사 각각 7개씩)이 포함된 이야기를 그림과 함께 듣고 난 후, 연구자가 제시하는 네 개의 그림 중에서 목표낱말을 고르는 의미 이해 과제를 수행하였다. 세 아동 집단 간에 과제 수행의 차이가 나타나는지를 살펴보기 위해 전체 정반응 점수와 낱말 유형(명사와 동사)에 따른 정반응 점수를 각각 산출하였으며, 이러한 점수가 집단 간에 통계적으 로 유의한 차이가 있는지를 알아보고자 비모수검정인 Kruskal-Wallis H test를 실시하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면 첫째, 의미 이해 과제에서 나타난 정반응 점수는 다문화가정 아동 집단과 단일문화가정 아동 집단 간에 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 둘째, 낱말 유형에 따른 의미 이해 점수 또한 세 집단 간에 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 본 연구 결과는 이미지를 활용해 단어를 자극할 경우 다문화가정 아동의 빠른 의미 이해 능력이 또래 단일문화가정 아동에 비해 뒤떨어지지 않음을 보여주었다. 이러한 결과는 언어발달 지체의 가능성이 높은 다문화가정 아동의 조기 중재 프로그램에 대한 통찰력을 제공한다. 즉, 다문화가정 아동의 어휘 습득 및 표현 언어 지체를 조기에 예방하고 발달을 촉진하려면 그림과 같은 이미지 자극 전략을 적극적으로 활용할 필요가 있다.
