Edward Gorey authored more than 100 books and illustrated more than 60 books for other authors such as Edward Lear and Samuel Beckett. Moreover, Gorey was interested in building a career in theatre. Therefore, he designed sets and costumes for Dracula, which was a Broadway hit in 1977. In spite of his tremendous volume of achievements, it is hard to find his research materials. Therefore, this study will explore Edward Gorey’s career. First, Gorey’s background will be examined. Second, a variety of episodes will be described in his life, including the initial phase of his work, his method of work and his drawings. Then, his typography and masterpieces will be mentioned. Finally, the works of Tim Burton, who was inspired the most by Edward Gorey, will be explained. Through this study, the research basis of Edward Gorey’s illustration would be formed.
