The understanding of the Meiji Restoration (明治維新) in Japan is currently recognized as a subject that needs to be discussed with their merits and demerits together. In this regard, the understanding of the Meiji Restoration still must be an ongoing issue regardless of the physical time of the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration. Was the Taika Reforms in the mid-7th century a reformation only in Wa (倭, the oldest recorded name of Japan)? Did other countries in East Asia, particularly Baekje and Goguryeo on the Korean Peninsula, fade into the mists of history because there was no reformation like the Taika Reforms(大化改新)? It can be said that the Taika Reforms, as another ‘restoration’ in ancient times, with time differences between ancient and modern times, were the product of modern historians’ attempts to distort history under these questions. 현재, 일본 국내에서의 메이지유신에 대한 이해는 그 공(功)과 과(過)가 함께 논의되어야할 대상으로 여긴다. 그런 점에서 메이지유신에 관한 이해는 150주년이라는 물리적 시기와 무관하게 아직도 현재진행형인 문제인 것만은 틀림없다. 아울러 7세기 중엽의 ‘다이카(大化)개신’은 왜국(일본)만의 개혁이었던가. 관련하여 동아시아의 다른 나라들, 특히 한반도의 백제와 고구려는 다이카개신과 같은 개혁이 없었기에 역사의 뒤안길로 사라지기까지 하게 된 것인가. 이상의 문제의식 아래 고대와 근대라는 시간적 차이를 두면서도 고대의 또 하나의 ‘유신’으로서 다이카개신은 일본근대가 만들어낸 공정의 산물이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 이는 결국 메이지유신과 다이카개신의 두 개혁이 시공간을 달리하면서도 일맥상통하는 것임을 말해준다.

今のところ日本国内での｢明治維新｣についての理解はその功と過がともに論議されるのと思われる。そのことで｢明治維新｣に関する理解は150周年という物理的な時期とは関わらず今も現在的に進行中の問題であるのは間違いない。また7世紀半ばの｢大化の改新｣は倭国(日本)だけの改革であったのか。それと関連して東アジアのほかの国々、特に韓半島の百済と高句麗は｢大化の改新｣のような改革がなかったから歴史の裏舞台に消えてしまったのか。以上の問題認識の下で古代と近代という時間的な差はありながらも古代のもう一つの｢維新｣として｢大化の改新｣は近代歴史学が作り出した工程の産物ということがわかる。これは結局｢明治維新｣と｢大化の改新｣という二つの改革が時空間を異にしながらも一脈相通するのである。
