This study investigated the effect of dichotomous thinking on the Interpretation of social situations and examined their characteristics. 150 college students(64 males, 85 females) were assigned to the dichotomous thinking priming group and the control group, and the two groups reported the affects they had experienced for a week and then performed the tasks. In this study, we used the set effects to make the dichotomous thinking priming group interpret the social situation through dichotomous thinking. The dichotomous thinking priming group repeatedly performed a task evaluating a certain words as two adjectives(eg, good or bad) in the opposite direction. The control group repeatedly performed the task evaluating specific words using continuous scales. Next, each group evaluated the feelings about positive, negative, and neutral situations that they could experience in their daily lives. As results, the dichotomous thinking priming group extremely evaluated the overall social situation more than the control group. In addition, the interaction of dichotomous thinking and emotions significantly predicted evaluations of overall and neutral social situations. Finally, the clinical implications and limitations of this study and recommendation are presented.

본 연구에서는 이분법적 사고가 사회적인 상황의 평가에 미치는 영향을 확인하고 그 특성에 대해 알아보았다. 이를 위해 대학생 150명(남자 64명, 여자 85명)을 이분법적 사고 점화집단과 통제 집단에 할당하였고, 각 집단의 참가자들은 일주일 간 경험한 정서를 보고한 뒤 실험 과 제를 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 갖춤새 효과를 사용하여 이분법적 사고 점화 집단이 이분법 적 사고를 통해 사회적 상황을 해석하도록 만들었다. 이분법적 사고 점화 집단은 이분법적 사고의 점화를 위해 특정 단어를 양극단의 두 가지 형용사(예. 좋은, 나쁜)로 평가하는 과제 를 반복하였고, 통제집단은 특정 단어를 연속적인 척도로 평가하는 과제를 반복하였다. 이후 각 집단은 일상에서 마주할 수 있는 긍정적인 상황, 부정적인 상황, 중립적인 상황에 대한 느 낌을 평가하였다. 연구 결과, 이분법적 사고 점화집단은 통제집단보다 전반적인 상황을 더욱 극단적으로 평가하였다. 또한 이분법적 사고의 점화 여부와 일주일간 경험한 부정적 정서의 상호작용이 사회적 상황의 해석에 미치는 영향을 확인한 결과, 이분법적 사고가 점화되고 부 정적 정서를 강하게 느낄수록 개인은 전반적인 상황과 중립적인 상황에 대하여 더욱 부정적 인 평가를 하는 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 본 연구의 임상적 의의와 제한점 그리고 향후 연구 방향을 제시하였다.
