The purpose of this study is to investigate the YeongJo’s reading career in the Gyeongyeon (經筵) of Joseon Dynasty. To investigate the Silrog (the book which records the history of Korea), it knew the reading material, a reading act and attitude which he read in the Crown prince time. Major findings are as the follows; The reading materials that he read in the Jugang(晝講) for 52 years were 13 titles, that is, Noneo(論語), Maengja(孟子), Jungyong(中庸), Seogyeong(書經), Yegi(禮記), Sijeon(詩傳), Juyeog(周易), Chunchujipjeon(春秋集傳), Simgyeon(心經), Jurye(周禮), Daehag(大學), Geunsarog (近思錄) and Sohag(小學) etc. The number of times that he participated to the Jugang’s reading discussion was 1341. He was the king who disliked reading, from 1724 to 1776, when he was in power, moreover he was not almost presented at the reading discussion of the Jugang at the end of seizure of power. As a result, YeongJo’s reading career was much lower than the King’s reading career in past.

본 연구에서는 조선조 21대 왕 英祖의 讀書歷을 살펴보기 위하여 實錄을 통해 재위 52년 동안 晝講에서의 독서일정을 살펴보았다. 영조는 경종 4년(1724) 30세에 재위하여 재정비한 경연제도에 따라 경연을 실시하였다. 그가 晝講에서 읽었던 책은 『論語』, 『孟子』, 『中庸』, 『書經』, 『禮記』, 『詩傳』, 『周易』, 『春秋集傳』, 『心經』, 『周禮』, 『大學』, 『近思錄』, 『小學』 등 13종이다. 이 중 『中庸』과 『大學』을 34년(1758)부터 39년(1763)까지, 그 뒤 다시 『小學』과 『大學』을 번갈아가며 재위 52년(1776) 1월까지 읽었다. 이는 곧 영조가 이 책들을 가장 선호 했음을 보여주고 있다. 영조는 재위 6년(1730)을 제외한 23년(1747)까지는 꾸준히 독서를 해왔으나 24년(1748) 후반기부터 33년(1754)까지는 거의 독서를 하지 않았다. 그의 독서 횟수는 즉위년부터 52년 3월까지 1,341회로 연평균 26회, 월평균 2.16회로 조사되었다. 이 수치는 부왕인 肅宗과도 비슷한 수치로 아주 저조한 독서력을 보여주고 있다.
