This study looked at how retirees use their time, and if there is any difference in the time-use depending on the economic level of retirees. In particular, we borrowed the concepts of the berry-huffindal index and entropy index, which are mainly used to calculate a company’s business diversification index. This was used to identify how time is allocated and used by the retirees by the subcategories that make up the time and to look at differences in economic levels. In this study, we explored ways to improve the well-being of retirees through more balanced activities, understanding the behavior of retirees in which they lead their lives after retirement. To that end, we used the data of the Statistics Korea time-use survey and analyzed the data of the household members of retirees who are not currently engaged in economic activities over the age of 60. The categories of time used by retirees were divided into five categories: mental activities, physical activities, social activities, productive activities, recreational activities, and above, by reference to prior studies. The main conclusions and suggestions are as follows. First, it has been shown that retirees spend the most of their time after retirement, such as watching TV, a relatively passive leisure activity, or preparing and cleaning meals that are included in household management activities. They need to improve their perception first so that they can balance out activities that fall into various categories of time even after retirement. Second, retirees need to be prepared so that there is a difference in the use of time by different levels of economic statistics so that hierarchical inequalities based on economic characteristics are not reproduced in time-use. Third, it is necessary to come up with measures to reduce differences depending on the economic level of households, even on the qualitative differences that the retirees presents in time-use, as it is found that there are differences in the concentration of time-use in different categories of time depending on the economic level. In the future, further studies will need to look at more diverse factors of influence related to the time-use of retirees, and utilize time series analysis. This is expected to allow them to seek more concrete ways to promote the welfare of retirees.

본 연구는 은퇴자가 생활시간을 어떻게 사용하고 있으며, 은퇴자가 속한 가계의 경제수준에 따라 생활시간을 사용하는 데 차이가 있는지 살펴보았다. 특히 기업의 사업다각화 지수를 계산하는 데 주로 활용되는 베리-허핀달 지수와 엔트로피 지수의 개념을 빌려, 은퇴자가 생활시간을 구성하는 하위 범주별로 어떻게 시간을 분배하여 사 용하고 있는지 그 집중도를 파악하고, 경제수준에 따른 차이를 살펴봄으로써, 은퇴자가 은퇴 이후의 삶을 영위하 고 있는 행태를 이해하고, 더욱 균형적인 활동을 통해 은퇴자의 복지를 증진시킬 수 있는 방안들을 모색하였다. 이를 위해 통계청의 생활시간조사 자료를 활용하였으며, 60세 이상으로 현재 경제활동을 하고 있지 않은 은퇴자 의 가구원 자료를 분석하였다. 생활시간의 범주는 선행연구를 참고하여 정신적 활동, 신체적 활동, 사회적 활동, 생산적 활동, 오락적 활동, 이상 5가지 범주로 구분하였다. 주요 결론 및 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 은퇴자는 은퇴 이후의 생활시간 중에서 상대적으로 수동적인 여가활동인 TV를 시청하거나, 식사를 준비하고 청소를 하는 등의 가정관리에 소비하는 시간이 가장 많은 것으로 나타나, 이들이 은퇴 이후에도 다양한 생활시간의 범주에 해 당하는 활동들을 균형적으로 해나갈 수 있도록 우선적으로 인식을 개선할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 은퇴자는 경제수준 에 따라 생활시간을 사용하는 데에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타나, 경제적 특성에 따른 계층적 불평등이 생활시간을 사용하는 데에 재생산되지 않도록 이를 대비할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 은퇴자는 경제수준에 따라 생활시간의 범주별 로 시간 사용에 대한 집중도에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타나, 은퇴자가 생활시간을 사용하는 데 있어서 나타나는 질적 차이에 대해서도 경제수준에 따른 차이를 줄이는 방안을 마련할 필요가 있다. 향후, 후속 연구를 통해 은퇴 자의 생활시간과 관련한 더욱 다양한 영향요인을 살펴보는 한편, 시계열적 분석을 활용함으로써, 은퇴자의 복지 를 증진하는 방안을 더욱 구체적으로 모색할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
