‘Golden Village’ was established in 1935, as an aftermath of the industrialization of Janghang Refinery. Whilst representing place memory of the refinery, the village also operated as a location for local businesses to prosper and settle. Currently to this day, the village has now disappeared into the pages of history books with residents moving away and buildings being demolished due to the land purification procedures from the polluted lands. However, through the interviews with the local residents and literature research, we have investigated the significance of Golden Village in Korean modern industrialization. According to the oral history recorded from the interview and documents, it was shown that the transition to modern industries was closely related to the extinguishment of the village. The story flows like: a peaceful seaside village in the middle of industrialization gets converted into ‘Background Support Town’ in possession of Modern Industrial Facility, which naturally led onto its disappearance with deindustrialization approaching. Changes that occurred in a short period of time within the village are strongly related to the decline of Janghang This is essentially the portrait of the modernization and industrialization in Korea in a smaller scale. There were limited amount of resources that discussed the objective changes in Golden Village, as it was a small administrative unit back in time. Thus, interviews with residents answered the parts that resource research could not solve. From the oral history of the interviewers, place memory from the village back in the days was extracted, ending with a chance to restore and record the village. Furthermore, the interviews were shown to be the tools for the potential connection between the place memory and the residents and the Local Regeneration Projects.

‘황금정(黃金町) 마을’은 1935년 탄생한 장항제련소의 배후지원마을로 장항 근대 산업사의 장소기억을 대표하며, 장항제련소 인근 상업과 주거의 기능을 수행하며 관 련 기억을 담고 있는 마을이다. 현재 오염으로 인한 토지정화사업으로 주민 이주와 시설 철거가 이루어져 마을의 흔적은 사라지고 없지만, 지역 주민 대상 구술과 문헌 조사를 통해 한국 근대산업사 및 장항 지역사에서 황금정 마을의 의미를 살펴보았다. 구술과 문헌조사를 통해 살펴 본 황금정 마을의 소멸 원인은 근대산업사의 변화와 밀 접한 관련이 있다. 평화롭던 어촌 마을이 산업화 과정에서 근대산업시설의 배후지원 마을로 변화하게 되고 산업이 쇠락하자 소멸에 이르게 된다. 황금정 마을의 변화는 장항읍의 쇠퇴와 매우 밀접하며 이는 단기간에 집약적으로 진행된 한국의 근대화 및 산업화의 축소판이기도 하다. 황금정 마을은 소규모 행정단위로 마을의 변화를 객관 적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 자료는 희박하였다. 문헌자료를 통해 밝혀내지 못한 부분을 주민들의 구술을 통해 조사하였다. 구술을 통해 지역 주민들이 공유하고 있는 황금정 마을의 장소기억을 추출해내고, 이 집단 기억을 바탕으로 황금정 마을의 모습을 복원 하고 기록할 수 있는 가능성도 확인할 수 있었다. 더 나아가 본 연구는 구술을 통해 대상지에 대한 지역주민들이 지닌 집단의 장소기억 추출하고, 그를 기반으로 각종 지 역재생사업에 컨텐츠를 제공하고 방향성을 제시할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
