In the late Joseon Dynasty, individuals gradually became the center of values as they tended to be de-Confucian, and it was thought that it was the 'truth(眞)' that existed here now. Therefore, intellectuals at the time were interested in the small everyday objects around them, and wanted to find beauty and value there, and they found it worthwhile to devote themselves to things or things they liked regardless of the world's reputation. The 'obsession(癖)' of an object that has been regarded as an obstacle to self-discipline turns into an expert's act or professional spirit of seeking an intrinsic value, a 'truth.' 'obsession' is an expression of self-conscious as I am. The desire to make an individual 'I' as an agent of history and art forms a cultural kind consciousness and 'obsession' is reinforced by it. This phenomenon has also appeared in the tea(茶) culture, in which intellectuals at the time not only indulged in tea, but also sought an academic approach to tea in a professional manner, and so on. They also shared their lives through letters and poetry about tea(茶詩). In the latter part of Joseon Dynasty, the revival of tea culture was possible thanks to the obsession with tea(茶癖) of intellectuals and the literature they left behind is valuable materials for the study of the tea culture history.

조선후기에는 사상적으로 점차 탈유가적 경향을 띠면서 개인이 가치의 중심에 서고, 지금 여기에 실재하는 것이 ‘眞’이라고 생각하게 되었다. 따라서 당시 지식인들은 주변의 소소한 일상 사물에 대해 관심을 가지고 거기에서 아름다움과 의미를 찾고자 하였으며, 세상의 평판에 개의치 않고 자신이 좋아하는 일이나 사물에 몰두하는 것을 가치 있다고 여기게 된다. 자기수양에 걸림돌로 치부되었던 사물에 대한 ‘癖’은 내재된 가치, 眞을 찾는 전문가적 행위로 변모한다. 癖은 ‘나’라고 하는 자의식의 발로이다. 개개의 ‘나’를 역사와 예술의 주체자로 세우고자하는 열망은 문화적 동류의식을 형성하고, 이로써 癖은 더욱 강화된다. 이런 癖의 현상은 조선후기 茶문화에도 나타나 당시 지식인들은 茶에 탐닉하는 것은 물론이며, 나아가 전문가적 자세로 茶에 관한 학문적 접근을 시도하여 전문적 다서가 등장하게 된다. 또한 그들은 茶詩와 편지를 통해 茶생활을 공유했다. 조선후기 지식인들의 ‘茶癖’ 덕분에 당시 차문화의 중흥기를 맞을 수 있었으며, 그들이 남긴 문헌은 차문화사 연구에 소중한 자료가 된다.
