The purpose of this study is to present that Ernest Pignon-Ernest’ art including thoughts about social or political issues in France reveal the problems of racism. The problem of racial discrimination in France continues to this day. It can be seen that the problems about art and society, the various problems of society, the relationship between the individual and individuals, and the relationship between individuals and another groups, which state still cause many controversies. For see that how artists have behaved in this situation, we will pay attention to Ernest Pignon-Ernest’s constant and repeated action. Because he also shows constant interest in the various social issues that have occurred in France. Also, this is because that the chosen place shows the problem of racial discrimination and political events accordingly. So, through the empirical analysis of the Ernest Pignon-Ernest’s works, we can discover the problems of racial discrimination in French society.

본 연구의 목적은 1960년대 말부터 거리에서 활발히 활동했던 리처드 햄블턴(1952-2017)과 에르네스트 피뇽-에르네스트(1942-)의 작품을 통해 서구 사회의 쟁점들 – 인종 관계, 노숙자 문제, 문화적 정체성 등 – 을 살펴보는 것이다. 노숙자, 인종주의, 도시 폭력 등과 같은 사회적인 쟁점과 관련한문제는 미술가/미술, 공동체/방문객, 갤러리(미술관)/거리 등으로 접근되었다. 대표적으로 햄블턴과 피뇽-에르네스트의 ‘예술적 개입’의 방법을 통한 행위는 일상 공간에서 이루어졌다. 이는 동시대에 활발히 전개되었던 행동주의와 공동체 미술과는 또 다른 형태로 나타난다. 정치·사회적 문제에 직접 반응하는 행동주의 미술은 ‘미술’보다 ‘행동’에 있으며, 정치적 행동과 밀접한 연관이 있기 때문이다. 이들의 게릴라 전술은 일상 공간에 침투하면서 도시 공간의 변혁에 적극적으로 개입했고, 사회의 변혁을 추구했다. 도시 공간에서 서로 맞물리는 이들의 다양한 행동들은그 방향이 다르지만, 이들의 개입은 대중 스스로 사회와 관련된 다양한 문제를 재고하게 한다. 우리는 리처드 햄블턴과 에르네스트 피뇽-에르네스트의 작품 분석을 통해 서구 사회의 다양한 사회 문제, 동시대에 활발히 전개되었던 행동주의 미술과 공동체 미술의 활동, 인종차별과 빈부격차등이 초래한 사회 문제 등에 따른 새로운 혜안들을 유추해 볼 것이다.
