The paper has examined the meanings and uses of ‘metaphor’ in order to justify it as an educational language. It is significant to examine that educational situations always are to initially be under positional asymmetry between teachers and pupils and due to the cognitive discrepancy between them, which is regarded as the main educational aim. Examinations have focused on the educational contents and methods as well as its necessity in educational situations. The former consists of three kinds: metaphors in literature such as poems and novels, in religious texts, and in fables. The latter also concerns on three kinds: on the analysis of ‘education’ to be duly understood, the conceptual expedients to improve human mind, and on the teaching-learning methods. Conclusively, as argued in the paper, the metaphor can take an important role for the advance of human mind and quality of life through semantic liberation(newness), open mindedness not to define, conceptual expedients, satires and so forth. While the metaphor is a linguistic matter, it goes beyond the limit and category that language itself establish, which means expanded the spans of our life. Under the all spheres of human activity, the metaphor can be regarded as a central concept of education, namely, an important educational language.

이 논문은 교육에서 원천적으로 야기되는 교사-학생의 비대칭 상황을 비유를 통하여 그 해결책을 모색 하고자 하였다. 이 중에서 학습장면에서 아이들이 당면한 인지수준 또는 지적 발달 수준과 일치하지 않 는 상황과 불일치 문제에 초점을 맞추어 ‘교육언어’로서 비유를 다루었다. 논의 결과 다음과 같은 비유의 네 가지 교육적 기능을 확인하였다. 첫째, 비유를 통한 인지수준의 고양이다. 둘째, 비유를 통한 삶의 영 역 확대이다. 인지수준의 고양이 비유의 종적 확장 기능이라면, 삶의 영역 확대는 횡적 확장 기능이다. 셋째, 비유를 통한 창의성 또는 창의적 표현력 향상이다. 비유가 창출하는 이미지는 곧 창의성을 뜻하며, 자신만의 독창적 세계를 구축하는 계기를 마련해준다. 넷째, 비유를 통한 심미적 세계의 심화이다. 비유 는 학생들의 관심을 현실적 필요나 유용성을 넘어서는 심미적 세계로 향하게 하는 매개가 된다. 이상은 비유가 ‘교육언어’로 자리매김하는 논거가 된다.
